According to the American Library Association, "Banned Books week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Its typically held during the last week of September. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship."

This symbol represents the support for the comic book legal defense fund. It is the symbol of having the freedom to read whatever book you choose and not banning books. Bone was also included in the be free to read symbol.

In 2005 Scholastic launched Graphix with the publication of Jeff Smith's Bone in full color. To celebrate ten years of publishing they offered a special tribute edition of Out Of Boneville. Bone was banned because it was said to have a political viewpoint, racism, and violence. Vol.2 of the book was said to be politically offensive.

Bone is one of the most challenged books in American libraries. The bone series has faced several challenges and one ban over the years.In 2013 bone was challenged twice in Texas schools. Because of the Texas challenges, Bone came in at #10 ALA's list of books frequently challenged in 2013.
