Elementary Teaching & Learning News
March/April 2019 Edition
Earth Day is April 22, 2019
Social media has recently connected me to images of foreboding (think plastic yogurt cups and bags swimming with sea turtles) - as well as hope (think bamboo reusable silverware and stainless steel straws).
Ask students what they are thinking about, and they'll inspire you. Work to create greater sustainability in your classroom, and you'll see their hearts and minds grow.
Attached are some resources to help you make change alongside your students. Like Black History Month and Women's History Month, Earth Day is a reminder to live daily with the importance of this thinking.
Also, try following an organization on social media that offers daily inspiration, tips, and reminders to keep our planet in your heart and actions. I like #zerowastetips on Instagram, but there are many on all social media platforms. While I'm far from zero waste, these daily reminders help me to make intentional plans to help reduce. We can snapshot some of this inspiration to help our students think about a cleaner more sustainable future as well.

Exemplars - Looking for Opportunity
Deb reminded us, "You own your math pacing calendar, it doesn't own you."
This spring, look for EnVision math lessons you can combine, condense, or even skip. Look for opportunities to do a few Exemplars tasks in a row. (If you didn't reset your password, your password is OSD186).
Use one to model, one for group work, and perhaps even give one independently to gather some data for instructional purposes.
These tasks ask students to go to deeper depths of knowledge and apply mathematical thinking and process skills. They are worth your while.

This book is about a girl who really likes socks. She's really organized. Her dad is an English teacher. At their house they don't have a TV, so all she really does is read books. She doesn't like her name. It's sunflower, but it's in Greek. It's Apollo, in the girl version, and Flores. And Apollo is the sun god, and Flores in Spanish is flowers, so it's sunflower. The state test inspired me to read this book. There was an excerpt from it and I liked it, and we had it in our classroom library.

Hi! My name is Jackie Robinson. Something interesting about my life is that I served in the army in the U.S. I would like to be remembered as the first African-American to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

This morning, when I was brushing my teeth, my dad pulled my tooth out. The tooth fairy is going to come! Tonight!
