Leading the Way
Congrats to Springfield MS Principal Marquis Spell, Winstead ES Principal Claudia Spencer and Darden MS Principal Jagtar Singh for completing Distinguished Leadership in Practice. This is a rigorous, year-long leadership program through the NC Principals and Assistant Principals Association. Superintendent Dr. Mills also awarded them the Bringing Home the Bacon Award at the March Administrators Meeting. WCS is grateful to Smithfield Foods Plant Manager Jose Pabon for providing bacon each month for this award.
Exploring History
"I would like to Shout Out! Vinson-Bynum ES Fourth-grade Teacher Cynthia Hardy for organizing a great student performance in February titled Exploring History Past and Present. The program celebrated African American History, diversity and cultural harmony. It was a wonderful performance that had everyone clapping. I am glad my daughter has Ms. Hardy as a teacher and thankful for the wonderful learning experiences she provides for her students." - Cynthia Ramirez, parent and WCS Administrative Assistant for Federal Programs

Ballet Performs
Shout Out! to the Arts Council of Wilson for bringing the New York Theatre Ballet to Wilson. The troupe performed for all WCS fourth-graders on March 19 at the Boykin Center. The New York Theatre Ballet is committed to bringing entertainment to smaller communities across the nation. It was an amazing experience for our students, and we are grateful to the Arts Council! Great coverage by Drew Wilson with The Wilson Times here.
Students Teach
In Transistion
Shout Out! to staff in our middle schools who did a great job rolling out the red carpet for future students. Fifth-graders across the district have been visiting the middle school they will be attending next year to get an idea of what it will be like. Pictured are fifth-graders visiting Toisnot MS on March 22.

More Shout Outs!
Superintendent Dr. Mills and Board of Education Member Rhyan Breen had a great time celebrating Vinson-Bynum ES Teacher of the Year Wendy Watson and her fifth-grade class of Smart Cookies on March 21! Dr. Mills and Mr. Breen recognized each student, and they all enjoyed cookies provided by Chick-fil-A.
The fourth-grade teachers at Lucama ES would like to Shout Out! Instructional Technology Facilitator Donna Currie for all her hard work! She is a welcome asset to the school and helps the teachers provide rigorous technology enhancements to their lessons.
Shout Out! to the three Middle School AIG Specialists - Leigh Anne Howard, Danny Barnes and Cheryl Johnson - for taking students from all six middles schools to the Area 4 Envirothon Competition. Three teams will compete in the upcoming State Competition. Congratulations to the Environmental Defaults from Springfield MS, Starfish from Elm City MS and Lily Pads from Forest Hills MS.
- Shout Out! to Fike HS Exceptional Children's Teacher Amelia Rivera-Speight for being selected as a presenter at the NC English Teacher Association Spring Literacy Symposium on April 6 in Statesville. Her session will explore how a teacher's own intersectionalities (race, class and gender) can affect the way he/she interacts with students who do not fit into the same categories. It will also explore ways educators can draw connections from their own identities to that of students.
- Shout Out! to Temesia Kirby for her generosity! For her birthday, she made a donation to Speight MS. We are so grateful for her support and hope she had the best birthday ever!
