Counselor's Corner
Parents,
As we kick off the start of another exciting school year, I would like the opportunity to introduce myself to you and let you know what you can be expecting here in the Counselor’s Corner throughout the year. My name is Carie Chandler. I am the new Student Support Counselor for Burleson High and its feeder schools. One of the responsibilities of this new support position is to provide some information and resources to the parents of our awesome students. Some issues we look to provide information on include:
Drug and Alcohol Education and Prevention
Mental Health Awareness
Suicide Prevention
Teen Dating Violence Awareness
Child Abuse Prevention
Bullying
Cyberbullying and Safe Use of Social Media
This list is not entirely comprehensive of the areas we hope to cover, but can give you an idea of what to look for in the upcoming weeks. September we will begin our focus on Cyberbullying and Safe Use of Social Media.
Just a quick bit of information about me. I am a Certified School Counselor and a Licensed Professional Counselor Intern. This is my 4th year as a counselor, and my 12th year in education. I am excited and honored to serve as your student’s counselor. My phone number is 817-245-0170. Please leave a message if I am unavailable and I will return your call as soon as possible.

PSAT Information for 9th, 10th, and 11th Graders
All BHS students in grades 9th-11th will take the PSAT on Wednesday, October 11th, 2017. (No registration or payment required for BHS students.)
Taking an SAT practice test is good practice for the PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 because the assessments measure the same skills and knowledge in ways that make sense for different grade levels. Get started today by visiting www.khanacademy.org.
Students can also download the SAT Daily Practice App in the App Store.
Kaplan is offering a NEW and FREE test prep opportunity for PSAT https://www.kaptest.com/psat/pages/psat-prep-live

Questions on which parent should complete your child’s FASFA?
FAFSA (free application for federal student aid) opens on October 1, 2017. Obtain your FSA at fsaid.ed.gov first and then visit fafsa.ed.gov to start a new FAFSA.
TSI (Texas Success Initiative)
The TSI Assessment is a program designed to help colleges determine if students are ready for college-level course work in the general areas of reading, writing and mathematics. When you are an incoming college student in Texas, you will be required to take the TSI Assessment — unless you are exempt (read below) — to determine your readiness for college-level work. Based on how you perform, you may either be enrolled in a college-level course that matches your skill level or be placed in the appropriate developmental course or intervention to improve your skills and prepare you for success in college level courses.
Exemptions
Have met the minimum college readiness standard on SAT®, or ACT.
Have successfully completed college-level English and math courses
We encourage students to check with their college of choice to determine if they need to take the TSI.
The first TSI administration will be on Friday, November 3rd. We encourage students who are not exempt to take the TSI while still in high school. Students who know they are attending a 2-year college are also encouraged to take the TSI if not exempt. Registration will begin in October.

Need a logo? A t-shirt design?
Attention Elk Nation:
Need a logo? A T-shirt design? Business card? Brochure? A digital graphic of any kind? Then let Coach Michael Snapp and his BHS Graphic Design and Illustration students help.
After a great start to the school year reviewing the basics of graphic design and Photoshop techniques, the GD&I classes are ready to take on any and all projects. Regardless of the size, scope, or nature of your graphic needs, we can handle it. Even if you're paying someone to design for you, contact me and let my kids take a crack at it. It's good practice for them, and could be MUCH cheaper for you, if you like the work.
If you're interested or have questions, email me at jeffory.snapp@bisdmail.net.
I hope to hear from you soon.

SENIORS AND SENIOR PARENTS
We have been having an issue with the yearbook’s email. The issue has been resolved. However, in order to provide proper customer service to our valued parents we are EXTENDING THE SENIOR AD DEADLINE to, Tuesday, October 2nd.
It is my hope that this will alleviate some of the stress of pulling information for ads together. Updated order forms are below.
Thank you for your continued support of The Elk Yearbook and the 2018 Senior Class.
