CELEBRATE HEALTH STANDARDS
The changes are derived from the California Healthy Youth Act, which require schools to provide students with integrated, comprehensive, accurate, and unbiased comprehensive sexual health and HIV prevention education at least once in middle school. The law is intended to ensure students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to 1) protect their sexual and reproductive health from HIV, other sexually transmitted infections, and unintended pregnancy; 2) develop healthy attitudes concerning adolescent growth and development, body image, gender, sexual orientation, relationships, and family; and 3) have healthy, positive, and safe relationships and behaviors. It promotes understanding of sexuality as a normal part of human development.
The current health framework is outdated; a new one should be completed and approved by June 2019. The current health standards can still be used, however the requirements as stated by the California Healthy Youth Act must be integrated with the standards.
NP3 Counselors are excited to lead the instruction on the specified skills and knowledge with PE classes for 7th and 8th graders this year. 6th graders will continue to participate in the "Deodorant Talk" with their teachers. Counselors are also working closely with NP3 ES and HS to make sure all kiddos K-12 are receiving the health information they need. If you have any questions please contact Taniia.
Go Team! Arrrgh!
