ICCS Mission Statement:

Strengthening spirits... minds... bodies... Through the teachings of Jesus Christ.

PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

By Christi Jarreau

It has been wonderful to be back on campus with your kiddos this week. We are enjoying the beautiful weather, being among friends, and learning with one another again.

Today is the feast day of St Therese who believed that every act of kindness mattered, no matter how small it may be. I find it fitting that we are celebrating her feast day as we start this school year, as we have certainly been focusing on “the little things” as St Therese did. In our effort to return safely to campus, teachers are tending and tweaking LOTS of little things to ensure our students’ safety during both a pandemic and hurricane recovery period. These little changes and tweaks always require just a little more from our teachers in a cycle that seems to be unending. I cannot explain how impressive it is that we have not reached a tipping point in this process. There are times that I can barely bring myself to ask that one more little thing from a faculty or staff member, but I am yet to receive anything less than a kind response with a joyful, above and beyond solution. This is what has allowed us to be ticking right along in this “new normal.” I am so very grateful to work with team members who, like St Therese, choose to do ordinary things with extraordinary love for others, especially when faced with our recent challenges.

While our days feel quite normal, they are definitely busier and include many new procedures than they did before. Students are doing quite well with being patient during things that take a little longer now, remembering their masks, and responding to reminders to social distance. Parents can help our days continue flowing smoothly with the following efforts at home:

  • Practicing good and efficient hand washing hygiene

  • Arriving on time with backpacks and lunch boxes ready to grab when exiting the vehicle

  • Ensuring students are in uniform with properly fitting masks

  • Encouraging students to practice masking and to be intentional in social distancing even outside of school, especially with close friends

  • Practicing listening and following directions (the first time) and following rules without being reminded

  • Exhibiting patience during new procedures or when glitches occur

We look forward to a great year of growing together as we continue to navigate the challenges and rejoice in the blessings that will continue to come our way. Thank you for supporting and partnering with Immaculate Conception Cathedral School in our mission of strengthening spirits, minds, and bodies through the teachings of Jesus Christ.

CURRICULUM CORNER

By Blair Tadlock

Welcome back to another school year at ICCS! While the start of the school year is certainly not what we meticulously prepared for, planned carefully for, and greatly anticipated, our amazing faculty and staff have remained committed to starting this year in service to our students and more fervently committed to our mission to strengthen the spirits, minds, and bodies of our students through the teachings of Jesus Christ. It has been wonderful to see so many students back with us this week and their happy eyes that no doubt are an indication of the smiles that are behind their masks. We are just so joy-filled to be back together and learning together. As we begin the year, we would like to give you some reminders that you are already familiar with as well as updates, and information regarding a few things that are new this year.

This school year we have moved to FACTS (formerly RenWeb), a comprehensive school management system and student information system (SIS). The FACTS web-based school management system is already familiar to ICCS parents as this is where financials, student enrollment, and family portal has been accessed in preparation for this school year - https://factsmgt.com/. We encourage families to log into the FACTS MGT site and visit the family portal for student information pertaining to assignments and grades. If you have not saved your FACTS MGT login credentials, the district code is ICCS-LA. More information about the family portal can be found HERE.

This school year we have a new single sign-on (SSO) for our students through the Clever portal. All apps (G Suite Education apps, BrainPOP, etc), websites, curriculum programs (ConnectED, Foss, Amplify, etc), and learning resources (AR 360, Freckle, etc) are in the ICCS Clever portal. All students will navigate to https://clever.com/in/iccsweb to access teacher pages and education apps by logging in with their Clever username and password. More information about Clever can be found HERE.

If you signed up to receive Google Classroom Guardian Email Summaries when you completed the ICCS Handbook Agreement form in August, the email rollout for acceptance to receive summaries has begun and will continue through next week. Please be aware that receiving these email notifications takes some time. Here is a FAQ about Guardian Summaries if you would like to learn more. Please note that parents can get email summaries sent to any email address. However, to view or update email summary settings, a Google Account is necessary. The email addresses used for Guardian Summaries are the ones that were submitted in the Google Classroom Guardian Summaries section of the ICCS Handbook Agreement form. Please note that accepting the invitation to this system is best done on a computer. Please make sure that your student is not logged into their Google Account on the Chrome browser when doing this.

As mentioned in the Panther Press in August, this year we have new and comprehensive ELA programs for K-8th grade students: Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) for K-5th grade and Amplify ELA for 6th -8th grade. To read about these programs, please access the Panther Press article HERE.

We would like to sincerely thank each of you for entrusting your students’ Catholic education to ICCS. It is a true gift and blessing to be back at school together after all the bumps in the road. Thank you for your perseverance and your exceeding patience as the start of this ICCS school year is different in many ways than we are traditionally accustomed to. Our ICCS families remain ever in our most immediate prayers and we ask Our Lady to intercede for us so that our knots and worries are undone together as a community.

Yours in Catholic education,

Blair Moses Tadlock

MERCY MATTERS

By Rose Viau

Our school theme for 2020-2021 is “Love is Kind,” which is taken from

1 Corinthians 13:4.

St. Paul tells us:

“Love is patient, love is kind.
It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love. “

Along with our theme we are using a new Virtue program called Disciple of Christ, Education in Virtue. It is a three year program that focuses on The Theological Virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity, the Cardinal Virtues of Prudence, Justice, Fortitude and Temperance, The Gifts of the Holy Spirit and the Beatitudes.

This month we will be learning about Kindness and Justice along with corresponding scripture verses and Saints who exhibited these virtues.

GREEENERY FUNDRAISER COMING SOON

The annual ICCS PTO Christmas Greenery fundraiser is right around the corner. This year’s fundraiser will feature an array of live aromatic noble fir and western cedar wreaths, 10’ garland, door swags, table centerpieces and an assortment of decorative items. All greenery items are hand-picked from the Pacific Northwest by Sherwood Forest Farms and will be delivered directly to ICCS the weekend of November 28-29, or to any home or business in the continental United States in early December. Decorate your home, office, post hurricane camper trailer or apartment for the holidays, or give fresh cut greenery as a unique gift for loved ones and/or business associates around the city, state or country.

Due to Hurricane Laura, the greenery fundraiser ordering dates have been delayed. On-line ordering begins next Wednesday, October 7, and will extend through Friday, November 6. More on-line ordering details will be provided next week. Please check your email inboxes, future issues of the Panther Press and the ICCS Facebook page for more information and links to the greenery ordering website.

PTO Reminder! Every ICCS family is required to either earn 300 PTO points throughout the school year, or pay $300. Selling and/or buying greenery is an easy way to earn PTO points. All ICCS families will earn PTO points equal to 50% of their total sales. For example, if you sell $200 worth of greenery your family will earn 100 PTO points for your efforts or purchases. Parents can also earn PTO points by volunteering to help unload and sort greenery on Saturday, November 28 in the ICCS gym. Families can easily earn all 300 PTO points during the ICCS Greenery Sale by buying/selling items and/or volunteering to help distribute orders the weekend after Thanksgiving. HONK THAT HORN!

Just in case you missed it, Mrs. Lori Brown captured a fun and happy moment on the ICCS playground yesterday during recess time. PRAYER AGAINST THE CORONAVIRUS

O Mary, you shine continuously along our journey as a sign of salvation and hope.

We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the Cross were near to the pain of Jesus, keeping your faith firm.

You, Salvation of the Roman people, know what we need, and we trust that you will provide for those needs so that, as at Cana of Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this moment of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us, He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and took up our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
