Superintendent reflects on Veterans Day
Our schools celebrated Veterans Day this week with patriotic songs, student and guest speeches, and recognition of our military families. There was a sense of deep gratitude across our schools for the service of the men and women who serve, as well as the sacrifices their families make on behalf of our national defense. One of my favorite moments was hearing a packed auditorium of fully-engaged elementary students sing the Armed Forces Medley -- Anchors Aweigh!
We have many local families who have loved ones deployed or recently returned from overseas. One middle school student choked up as she spoke about her father's deployment, and the deep sense of respect and love she has for her parents. The message at all the assemblies was loud and clear: Dads, moms, grandparents and other family members looked on with pride.
As we celebrate Veterans Day on Monday, it's a good opportunity to reflect on all the rights we enjoy as a nation: speech, religion, due process of law, etc. We should celebrate the 110 million citizens who voted this week, an example of the American people engaged in civic activity at the core of our democracy. We should also encourage our students to be grateful and to make the most of the amazing opportunities they have in our schools, community and nation.
In commemoration, please note that the Veterans Memorial at Rice Field will be open Sunday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. It's a great opportunity to stop by, read the inscriptions about our nation's wars and conflicts and reflect for a moment on the sacrifice provided by so many.
Thank you, veterans and active military personnel. We deeply appreciate your service.
- Dr. Mark Wenzel, Superintendent
Veterans Memorial Plaza Open for Veterans Day
We invite the community to visit Veterans Memorial Plaza at Anacortes High School this Veterans Day and show appreciation to all the brave men and women who have served, and continue to serve, our country.
The plaza will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 11 and on Monday, November 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. No events are planned; rather we invite the community in for reflection and tribute. The plaza is comprised of a memorial designed by local architect Brooks Middleton, with input from the Veterans Memorial Committee, as well as a display honoring two Medal of Honor recipients with local connections. The Anacortes School District is closed on Monday, November 12 in observance of Veterans Day.
