Newsletter Week 6 Term 3

Sacred Heart School Petone Wednesday 1st September, 2021

PRINCIPAL'S PEN

Malo ni Parents and friends

Well here we are again! Thanks to the staff for their quick change into online learning and for making the learning packs. Please do not stress about completing the work, do as much or as little as suits your family needs at this time. Please continue to check the messages we send as these contain important information. We strongly encourage you to book for your vaccination and remember that you can also book for your children if they are between 12 and 15 years of age.

We hope to be back to Alert level 2 as soon as possible but that will depend on everyone continuing to play their part. Thanks to Katy, Jacqui, Anna and Des for returning to work today.

Unfortunately due to the change in Alert levels some school activities have already been cancelled and we have reviewed and updated our google calendar for the rest of this term. Here are some events which have been cancelled:

  • All SWZ and Interzone Swimming events are cancelled.
  • Artsplash has been cancelled and they are looking at trying to find an alternative date in Term 4. We will refund you if you have already purchased a ticket.
  • Grandparent's Mass - No masses will be said in the Archdiocese until we get to Level 1 and we also do not want to put our Grandparent's health at risk.

Thanks to our Cook Islands language group for their leadership of Cook Islands language week. They were fantastic.

Thanks for your support of Caritas Mufti Mania. We raised $270.70 for Kristus Raja School

HERO Comments: The next HERO comment will be at the end of Week 9, 24th September

Classes 2022: We have started thinking about our classes for next year and how they will be made up. All our Senior classes will be quite large next year due to the fact that we only have 13 Year 8's leaving. This will have a flow on effect right down the school. If your child will not be returning to Sacred Heart next year we would appreciate knowing this as soon as possible as this will also contribute to how many new enrolments we can take for next year

Thought for the Week

" It is in humility that we build the future of the world" (Pope Francis @pontifex)

Stay safe and take care

Our Special Character

Please continue to keep all our candidates and their families in your prayers as they continue their Sacramental Journey. The parent meeting for First Communion will be on Thursday 16th September at 7pm. First Communion will be celebrated at 9.30am Mass on Sunday 3rd October if we are in Level 1. This date may change. We will have the First Communion Retreat Day on the 24th September so that the children are ready for whatever the date may be.

As a school we celebrated the Feast of the Assumption last Friday with a Liturgy honouring Mary as the patroness of New Zealand. Thanks to Fo'i for her organisation of the Liturgy.

On the Feast of the Assumption St Mary of the Angels Church, New Zealand was rededicated to the patronage of Mary. A special piece of art was blessed and it will now travel the country and return to Wellington next March, where it will be placed in the same church which will become a shrine.

Class liturgies have begun with Kotuku and Kereru hosting their liturgies. The following are the revised Liturgy Dates if we are in Alert Level 2:

  • Wednesday 15th September- Tui & Ruru
  • Wednesday 27th October- Pukeko
  • Wednesday 3rd November - Kakapo
  • Wednesday 10th November- Kea

You are most welcome to come and join with your children for these Liturgies.

Celebrating our students

The Marist Colts visited us on Friday 6th August and was a highlight of the week for many. A big thank you to all the teachers and tamariki who jumped for a ball, especially Miss Heatley! You were all so brave.

On Tuesday10th August we were privileged to have the Sacred Heart College Roadshow come and perform for us. They played solo instruments and in groups in many different styles, and they even shared some hip hop dancing! We love having them come each year, thank you Sacred Heart College!

On Monday 16th August we celebrated our Bronze token reward of a wacky hair day. There were many different wigs and colours and styles. Check out Mila and Jaymee from Kereru and Malia from Kotuku below.

Some of our students were lucky enough to join Mel in Kereru at Rise Up to make Gemstone necklaces.

Lunchonline - PIZZA lunch special - one day only! 15th September 2021. To order yours, please see below for creating a Lunchonline account. (Alert Level Dependent).

Yummy Stickers - please continue to bring these in as Term 3 is the last term for collecting these and earning sports equipment for our school. Please see Anna in the office if you require a new sticker sheet.

School Leader Speech - Andres

Christ is like a single body which has many parts; it is still one body even though it is made up of different parts. All of you are Christ's body and each one is a part of it.

As many of you know, the focus of this term is Sense of Community. It is the value that means creating a safe enviroment to work in and being aware of the people around you as well as being nice to them.

Sense of Community essentially is a feeling people have of belonging; not just your friends but everyone in order for them as well as you, to be comfortable and happy.

In the playground this means being inclusive and welcoming them, and doing it not because you have to, but becuase you want to.

A great example is in the Olympic Games, where athletes from around the world compete in different events and sports. This event signifies that the world is just a large community and when someone falls, the other athletes make it their mission to make sure that every athlete finishes the race.

I would like to finish with a quote from Romans 15:7: "Therefore welcome one another as Chris has welcomed you for the glory of God."

Thank you (Andres)

Enrolments for 2022 close on Monday 6th September.

You can enrol online through our school website at https://enrolments.linc-ed.com/apply/NZ/2984 or come into the office to collect a hard copy. Please note a Birth Certificate and Certificate of Preference must be provided. You must enrol before September 6th if your child is a sibling. Please do not assume you will get in as we must keep our process transparent.

Please remind any family and friends who may be considering Sacred Heart Petone next year. Any late enrolment applications will go on a waiting list.

If you are not returning to Sacred Heart next year or are moving away, please let us know as soon as possible.

Parking safely at school.

There has been a rise in parents/caregivers parking illegally while dropping off or picking up students. We have had several complaints from neighbours and other concerned parents and staff.

Parking on broken yellow lines by the school crossing, double-parking and blocking driveways is not only inconsiderate and illegal but putting our children at risk. It does not reinforce the road safety rules we learn at school and makes it very difficult for our school patrollers to help our tamariki cross the road safely.

Due to the rise in complaints, Senior Community Constable Tony Shearer and the Parking Wardens will be making regular visits to our school during these busy times to monitor the situation. Any vehicle seen in violation of the road rules will be photographed and will receive a personal phone call from the police and a fine.

We are sending home a brochure from Hutt City Council today about parking safely near schools. Please read it, drive safely and remember to put our student's safety first.
