DEER CREEK ELEMENTARY NEWSLETTER
November 18, 2022
News from the Office
Please have your child arrive on time for school. Car riders can start lining up early and teachers will dismiss them at 7:30 a.m. Remember, students are tardy to class if they are not in their classrooms by 7:40 a.m.
Please use School Dismissal Manager to report how your child goes home. You can also use it to report absences or late arrivals due to appointments. You can also call the Attendance Line at 317-594-4840 to report an absence.
We know that many of our families have enjoyed the opportunity to eat lunch with their student(s). However, due to safety and space limitations in some of our schools, district administration has made the difficult decision to keep our student lunches closed to all outside guests at this time.

NOTES FROM NURSE
Notes from the Nurse
Hello Deer Creek Parents/Guardians!
With the weather becoming so unpredictable, make sure you dress your students appropriately for the bus to/from school and to go outside for recess. If your student does not have warm clothing, they will need to stay in the office for their recess time.
Also, if your student is one that needs to take Tylenol or Ibuprofen for an extended time, i.e. orthodontic monthly adjustments, broken bone, migraines, growing pains, etc, please send in a supply of the medication to be kept in the clinic. It will be designated for your child only. I have a very limited supply.
One more thing – Keep washing your hands! Best preventative for colds and flu!
Thanks!

BOOK OF THE MONTH CLUB
We Are Water Protectors, written by Carole Lindstrome, illustrated by Michaela Goede
Summary: The Ojibwe narrator has been taught by her Nokomis (grandmother) that water is sacred, “the first medicine”. A prophecy tells of a black snake that will destroy the land, poisoning the water and killing plants and animals. Now it seems as though that prophecy has come true, and the girl wants to fight the black snake and save the water. She’s fighting for the plants and animals that can’t protect themselves and for Mother Earth herself. The last page shows the protest at Standing Rock: “We are water protectors. WE STAND! The black snake is in for the fight of its life.” This book was a Kirkus Award Finalist and was awarded the Caldecott medal in 2020.

Deer Creek Counselor News
If your family needs assistance during the holidays- there are resources available. There is still time to apply for help through the Good Samaritan Network. They will take applications until November 27. Check out the website- and link to their online application. https://www.gsnlive.org/holiday-assistance
Please make sure your child is wearing warm clothes because they will go outside for recess in “winter coat weather”. I would also suggest an extra sweatshirt or sweater to keep at school for those days that a little extra may be wanted while in the building.
