Good News Call
CPI Training
For those of you not familiar with CPI Training, it stands for Crisis Prevention Institute. CPI focuses on the prevention and management of difficult behavior. While CPI does address physical restraints, it also includes de-escalation techniques to prevent the need for physical restraint.
The staff attending our Central training have been notified. Please remember, if you can avoid it, please do not request a substitute for Thursday, December 13th. Thank you!
Winter Benchmark Testing Update
Our first week of winter benchmark testing was great, and our students are showing growth! Keep up the great work this week!
*Please be sure to review 504 plans and IEPs in order to support students who have testing accommodations.*
Here are suggestions for helping students succeed on this important assessment:
- Prior to your test day, talk to your students about the purpose and importance of this assessment.
- Make sure your students are comfortable logging into the Chromebooks.
- Engage your students in a goal setting activity. Conference with students about their current data, and help them set goals for the winter benchmark.
- Communicate testing dates with your students' families to encourage home support.
- During testing, provide a quiet testing environment for all students. Have quiet activities planned ahead of time for those students who finish early. Make sure those activities are communicated to students ahead of time.
- Plan time after testing to conference with students about individual growth.
Please have your data entered into your grade level data sheet by Friday, December 14th. This will help our data teams have everything ready for data meetings the following week.
Final Plan for The Polar Express
This is all of the same information as the email I sent out Saturday night.
- Click here to view the permission slip for the movie.
- Permission slips will be ready for you to send home Monday afternoon.
- Please manage the return of the permission slips at the classroom level.
- We anticipate very few students opting out of the movie. Please plan to combine students opting out at each grade level into one room. Please create an alternative activity prior to December 20th.
- Specials teachers, please supervise during both movie times.
- Grade level teams, between classroom teachers and specials teachers, we would like at least one certified, grade level teacher per class supervising students. For example, since first grade has seven classes, four classes will be covered by specials teachers. At least three first grade teachers should also be supervising at any given time throughout the movie. Please decide with your team how you would like to rotate supervision among all of the teachers on your team and provide supervision for the group of students not watching the movie.
- Interventionists (including reading/math paraprofessionals), please plan to supervise during at least one movie time. Work together to decide which two of you will supervise in the morning and afternoon.
- Additional paraprofessionals, please supervise in the gym during the times the students with whom you work are watching the movie. In addition, please supervise in the gym during times you are not working with students.
- Special education staff, please plan to supervise in the gym and be ready to support any students on your caseload who need breaks or extra support.
- An administrator will also supervise during each movie time.
Specials
- As mentioned, specials will not run on Thursday, December 20th. Specials teachers (with the exception of Jon who already covers two lunch periods per day), please work together to decide which lunch periods you will help with.
- Second grade, I will let the CIS PE teachers know there will be no second grade PE at CIS that day.
Logistics
- The morning movie will begin at 9 a.m. with second and third grades. We will begin calling classes down at 8:50. The movie will end about 10:40 a.m.
- The afternoon movie will begin at 1:10 p.m. with kindergarten and first grades. We will begin calling classes down at 1:00 p.m. The movie will end about 2:50. p.m.
- FYI, third grade lunch ends at 1:10, so we need to make sure that all classes are in the gym by 1:10 so hallway traffic isn't an issue.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Dr. Dunnan or Ericka!

Sanity Savings Reminder
From Mr. Heidbreder:
It is Sanity Savings Time at Central! :) The annual tradition of showing Central staff our appreciation via early release time will once again be offered during the month of December. At 3:30, members of the CPS staff who have met all student-related and/or other professional obligations (i.e. supervision, scheduled meetings, etc.) will be allowed to leave for the day.
The administrators appreciate all you do every day. Enjoy!
