School in Session on Presidents Day
Blizzard Bag Assignments Due February 21st
Blizzard bags are at-home assignments students are required to do in place of attending school on certain snow/calamity days. Blizzard bag assignments take the place of the work students would have performed had school been in session. Students who fail to complete their blizzard bag assignments and turn them in within 10 school days will be marked with an unexcused absence for that day.

Calling All Watch Dog Dads
The Watch D.O.G.S. program has been so successful in bringing fathers and father-figures into the classroom. It has been a very positive experience for our students of every grade level. Here is what we know: Kids develop more fully, socially, physically, academically, emotionally and spiritually when they have a positive role model actively engaged in their life. “Actively Engaged!!” Spring is right around the corner and this is a call for all of our Watch Dog Dads to begin scheduling their time on the calendar to come in and strengthen our school by mentoring and tutoring our students and demonstrating through your actions how much you value your children’s education. We all appreciate your time and positivity when you volunteer in our school! Please visit Watch Dog Dads to schedule your day. See you soon!

Kindergarten Registration for 2018-2019
PLEASE NOTE: All families (whether new to the district or with existing students) should begin the kindergarten registration process by using the online registration form.
Kindergarten registration for Fall 2018 begins in the district Wednesday, March 14.
Children must be at least 5 years old by Aug. 1, 2018, to be registered for kindergarten this fall. The district offers half-day kindergarten in both morning and afternoon sessions. Parents may request a morning or afternoon preference. Depending on the number of parents with preferences, a lottery may be held to determine placement.
The kindergarten registration process begins by filling out the online registration form.
Access to the kindergarten registration system will be open by approximately 9 a.m. that morning. After filling out the basic registration information, parents will receive an email with details about contacting the district’s Welcome Center to arrange an appointment to sign paperwork. At that time, parents also will set an appointment for a readiness assessment for their children. Those assessments will be held April 30, May 1 and May 3 at Violet Baptist Church, 8345 Blacklick-Eastern Road (S.R. 204).
Parents are advised that, due to the high number of callers, our staff and phone lines at the Welcome Center may be very busy at the beginning of kindergarten registration. We appreciate your patience!
How do I know if my child is ready for kindergarten?
Assuming your child will be 5 years old by Aug. 1, the district will perform an assessment. This year, those assessments will be April 30, May 1 and May 3 at Violet Baptist Church, 8345 Blacklick-Eastern Road (S.R. 204). These individual screenings (called Bracken assessments) are performed by trained district educators. They are only used by the district to help teachers determine where to begin teaching individual children.
The Bracken assessment tests children on skills such as identifying common colors by name, identifying upper case and lower case letters, identifying single and double-digit numbers, counting objects, demonstrating a basic knowledge of words used to depict size, identifying shapes, and matching or differentiating objects based on specific characteristics.
Find complete information about kindergarten registration and assessments on our website.

Pickerington for Puerto Rico
Last September, hurricanes Irma and Maria hit Puerto Rico. Now, six months later, schools, neighborhoods, rural areas, and the rest of the U.S. territory are still trying to recover from the devastating storms.
Amy Palmer and her first-grade students at Heritage Elementary are combining their learning with service and taking action to help those recovering from the storms. The class has adopted a school in Puerto Rico and is conducting a district-wide supply drive to help rebuild the school and continue learning.
The district-wide supply drive will take place from Feb. 26-March 2. Each Pickerington building will be given a box to hold supplies. All donations will be collected by Pickerington High School Central service learning students on March 2.
The Puerto Rico Department of Education has identified the supply list below as “high need.” Each day, collection items will fit into a different theme, but any donation on the list will be accepted at any time. Items will be shipped directly to Puerto Rico.
Monetary donations are also welcome. Please make checks payable to PLSD and indicate Pickerington for Puerto Rico in the memo. Checks can be given to building secretaries secretaries or mailed to Heritage Elementary, 100 N. East St. Pickerington, OH 43147.
