Learning Inquiry
During the year all of our teachers are inquiring into learning and teaching. A special part of our job is looking at research and making changes to our practice to support raising the achievement of our learners. Our teachers are really committed to making a difference.
The research inquiry focus in Te Kākano is based around the importance of our learners taking risks in their learning both in and out of the classroom. To allow all Te Kākano students to have authentic experiences they organised a trip to the YMCA to experience rock climbing, a fitness circuit, and gymnastics. Great stories of courage and risk taking, as well as students supporting each other came out of this day. The highlight was tackling the rock climbing wall. It was amazing to see the learners take on challenges, encourage each other and feel a sense of pride when they overcome their fears.
Te Kākano would love to thank all the wonderful parents that came to support us for the trip. Also a special thank you to Conrad Murray, Neve’s dad who was our rock climbing expert. Enjoy the photos!
Growing Communities
There are many exciting changes happening in Te Kākano over the next few weeks. As our numbers increase and we welcome our new friends into Te Kākano we are also increasing our teaching staff in response to this. We will have four full-time teachers working collaboratively to support our children in term 3 and 4. Fortunately, our strong teaching team remains the same with Mandy Bennett, Tina Johnson, and Rachael James increasing their hours.
We are opening up room 5 as an additional teaching space. We have carefully planned and programmed how this will continue to strengthen our teaching and learning programmes. We will continue to offer play-based learning complemented with strong foundation teaching in literacy and numeracy across the two spaces.
Room 5 will be used during the day for break out literacy and numeracy workshops while learning through play will operate in the Te Kākano learning hub. Room 5 will also be used as a ‘Home Hub’ for our older children in Te Kākano.

It's In The Bag
Please join us in the school community hall next Friday 21 June to have a bit of fun with other school families and staff. See Robyn in the office to book a ticket, $10 each. This is a great way to support our school and to get to know other community members and have a laugh on a winter's night. See you all there. Thanks to Karrie Crowe and SFRC for initiating this event.
NGĀ KUPU O TE WIKI
This week’s kupu is ‘Homai te pakipaki’, which means ‘clap your hands’. We might use this kupu when we are applauding someone for a great performance or congratulating them on something they have done well. There will definitely be plenty of this happening very soon during Frankley’s Got Talent!
Next week’s kupu is ‘kua reri?’ which means ‘are you ready?’ This too is a helpful phrase to use in the classroom or at home. Give them a go, see how many times you or your tamariki can use them - Kia kaha te Reo Māori - keep our Māori language alive!
WHĀNAU PUANGA WHAKANGAHAU AT MURU RAUPATU MARAE
We are very excited to let you know that this year to celebrate Puanga (the Māori New Year) we are once again heading out to Muru Raupatu for a noho marae (sleepover) and celebration day with a delicious hāngī to finish it off. The whole school will attend the celebration day and those whānau that would like to stay the night with their children can do so. An information notice will be sent out shortly with more details. For the moment, save this date - Tuesday 25th June to stay the night, Wednesday 26th June – Celebration Day.
