The ancient Greeks developed the idea of democracy, which is important to people worldwide today. Greece was divided into more than 100 city-states. The most famous city in Greece is Athens. In Athens, men could vote for their leaders, laws, and policies, or a governments methods and plans. Greek ideas and culture were spread through the Mediterranean created by Alexander the great, who created a great empire. The Romans built their empire when Alexander died. Augustus began 200 years of peace, called Pax Romana.
