Carrillo Community Update
July 2023
Welcome to the 2023-24 School Year!
Hello Carrillo Families and Community Members,
Welcome to the start of the 2023-24 school year! The entire Carrillo team is looking forward to another outstanding year with your students! While you have been on summer vacation, we’ve been busy on campus getting campus ready for the return of our young cougars. All the rooms have been outfitted with new Promethean Active Panels to continue our mission to provide students with everything they need to achieve greatness!
I also wanted to give you all an update on the beginning of this school year so that you have time to plan and prepare. If you have a question that is not answered below, please email or call me or bring them with you one of our upcoming events on campus. We are looking forward to having you back on campus!
Thank you for your commitment to Carrillo and TUSD. We are so excited to begin this year in partnership with you and help your student find their individual superpowers that will lead them to Sucess Across the Edu-Verse!

Schedules

Classroom Assignments and Procedures
Teacher Assignments
Teacher teams met and reviewed a variety of data to ensure that students were placed where they would be the most successful. Classroom assignments will be available the week of July 31st and will be posted at our “Meet the Teacher” event on Wednesday August 2nd from 2:00 – 3:00 pm. If you are unable to attend the “Meet the Teacher Event, please give the office a call and we can help you. Class assignments will also be available on your Parent Vue account once the school year rolls over.
Supplies
Many parents have reached out and asked about supply lists. Teachers will give their supply lists out at the Meet the Teacher event. They are also posted on our website. You may also access them using the hyperlinks below.
If you encounter any difficulty, please email the office and we'll get the list to you.
Attendance Matters
Attendance in school is directly correlated to student achievement, so it is extremely important your students are in school every single day to be successful. Research shows that missing more than 8 days of school can cause significant gaps in a student’s education. Please try to schedule appointments or family outings outside the school schedule and during school holidays. If a student is consistently absent, a member of the Family Support Team will reach out to see how we can best support you.
If your student does need to miss a day, please be sure to call in to our new Attendance Technician, Diane Quiroz at 225-1202 so she can record the reason for the absence. Her line is open 24 hours a day to report student absences. Thank you for your help!
Volunteers / Visitors
We encourage all parents to register as volunteers on the TUSD website (https://jobs.tusd1.org/volunteer) as the process takes a few weeks to complete. Parents cannot volunteeer on field trips without completing this in advance.
We ask non-parental volunteers (grandparents, aunts, uncles, community members, etc.) to contact the office before registering as a volunteer so we can explain the process and help identify volunteer opportunities.
Health and Safety
Breakfast and Lunch
The meal cost and menu are availble onthe TUSD Food Services webiste.
We are asking all families to please apply to the free/reduced lunch program online (https://www.tusd1.org/food-services-non-cep ). This will allow many families to have reduced or no cost meals and will also ensure that Carrillo continues to receive its correct Title I funding in the future.
This funding impacts our instructional program (and funds our teaching assistants) so we are asking all families to apply to see if they are eligible even if students plan to bring a home lunch. Thank you for your help!
Snacks
Snacks can be brought from home; however, we continue to ask that students not to share anything with others as a health and allergen precaution. Classroom teachers will designate snack time and welcome donations to the classroom so that all students can enjoy a mid-morning snack to fuel their learning.
Kind Campus
We will also be adopting the TUSD "No-Slur Zone" iniative. Thank you for helping reinforce the Carrillo expectations of calling students only by their names and use only kind words.
Transportation and Student Drop Off/Pick Up
Drop Off and Pick Up
Students can be dropped off starting at 7:35 am. There is no student supervision prior to this time.
The only designated student drop off and pick up area is located at 17th Street (one street south of Carrillo School). This is a stop and go area only. If you are planning to accompany your student inside the building for an appointment or to visit the office, we welcome you use the parking lot in the front of the school to park.
Dismissal
Parent Pickup will continue to be at 17th street. Thank you for remaining in your car. We will continue to use radios and a loudspeaker to call for studentsthis year to keep pickup lines short.
Please note that the city has redefined some fire lanes that must be kept open along Samaniego with bright red paint. Thank you for not parking or stopping in those spaces. Thank you also for keeping the neighborhood driveways and mailboxes open as a courtesy to our neighbors. Thank you for your help!
Please see the recommended way to depart the neighborhood once you have picked up your student. This will eliminate congestion and increase the safety for both our families and the surrounding neighborhood community members.
Walking/Biking Home
If your child is walking/riding home, thank you for ensuring the office has a note giving permission at the beginning of every school year. For the safety of the students, we cannot allow them to walk home without a new pemission letter on file each year.
Thank you for confirming any pickup arrangements with your student prior to your student coming to school.
School Bus Information
Bus information will be available on ParentVue. If you have questions about transportation eligibility, please visit http://www.tusd1.org/Departments/Transportation
Extended Day
We expect Extended Day to begin on August 14th.
