the underground railroad was neither underground or a railroad. it got his name because of its secret network activities. it was a challenge to help the slaves escape and they needed aid.

the underground railroad was a bunch of safe houses that provided hiding places and food. The people who took the fugitives were mostly conductors or engineers. If they wouldn't be in a safe house they would get captchard.
