THE AUDITION PROCESS
What must be done in order for student to audition for the CISD Honor Choir?
Parent/Guardian must have completed and signed the ONLINE Audition Application . No student may audition without a completed application. (If a parent/guardian has technical difficulties and is unable to complete an application online, please arrive 30 minutes before your school's audition time to complete an application in person.)
What is the audition process like?
1. All the students from each school who wish to audition must be at SH Crowley Elementary on their audition date.
2. Arrive at SH Crowley Elementary 10 minutes before their school's audition time begins, meet your music teacher in the cafeteria (located at the front of the school). Every auditioning student must have their parent/guardian sign them in by scanning a QR code or on a phone/computer.
3. The audition judges will listen to the students sing together, first in small groups and then students will sing by themselves.
There are three parts to the audition:
Repeat rhythms that are clapped for them.
Sing pitches that are sung for them.
Sing “America” (My Country ‘Tis of Thee). The words will be on a music stand in front of the students. They will not have to sing from memory. Practice recordings can be found on our website.
4. Students may leave after their audition.
Your student's music teacher from their campus can help if you have other questions about the audition process.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What if we cannot attend the scheduled audition date or time for my student's school?
If there is a problem with the assigned audition time, please contact Jenny Everwine, Honor Choir Director: jennifer.everwine@crowley.k12.tx.us. Please put “Honor Choir Audition” in the subject line of your email and identify yourself and your student by name and the school they attend.
You may also call or text Mrs. Everwine at 682-268-0297. We are happy to work with calendar conflicts during the audition window and can schedule another audition time for your student.
What if I don’t think my student can sing?
After a few months of being a member of the Honor Choir, many families have said that they had no idea their student could sing so beautifully! If your student has the desire to sing in this group, please do not tell them they cannot sing. Let them audition. They may make the choir and surprise you!
When will my student know if they have qualified to be a member of Crowley Honor Choir? How are we notified?
The members of the 2024-2025 Honor Choir season will be announced on Friday, April 19. Students and families will be contacted at the email address you put on the audition application. The list of choir members will also be posted at each school and on the Honor Choir website.
What makes a student successful in the Honor Choir? Attending every rehearsal. Practicing music and choreography at home.
How can I contribute to their success? Parental involvement and support help a student become successful in anything they do. If your student is accepted into the choir, you should consider becoming a parent/guardian volunteer. Our volunteers are the foundation of the Honor Choir. Your presence is very important to your student and to us.
When and where does the CISD Honor Choir meet?
The choir meets each Tuesday afternoon school from 4 - 6 pm beginning the first full week of school in August. Extended Tuesday rehearsals and extra rehearsals on Thursdays and weekends are scheduled as we approach major concerts and events. There might also be additional dance rehearsals scheduled for select groups.
The choir presently meets at SH Crowley Elementary School in the cafeteria.
How do the members of the CISD Honor Choir get to rehearsal?
Parents and families are responsible for transporting the singers to rehearsals from their school campuses. Very often, students from the same school form car pools.
How much does the Honor Choir uniform rental cost?
The Honor Choir Patriotic and Formal uniforms cost $100.00 per year for uniform rental.
This fee is nonrefundable. Payment arrangements can be made with parents/guardians.
All choir members must also purchase two CISD Honor Choir polo shirts. The cost is $25 each. The payment for the polo shirts must be made the first day of Summer Camp (late Summer, 2024; final dates will be announced soon).
Please do not keep your child from auditioning for Honor Choir because of money. There are a few scholarships to help with uniform cost.
Are there other costs and expenses related to being a member of Crowley Honor Choir?
We have 3-4 Honor Choir parties during the year. These parties are $6.00 per student. Other performance and travel opportunities might be offered during the year. Dates and cost will be provided once details are finalized.
When are the concerts? How do students get to the concerts?
Concerts are most often on Saturdays. We have two major concerts a year, a Veteran’s Day concert in November and a Spring Show concert in April or early May. Before major concerts, there will be extra rehearsals scheduled (particularly on Thursday evenings and Saturdays) and regular Tuesday rehearsals will often be extended to 3 hours.
In addition to two major concerts during the school year, the choir will have additional performance opportunities throughout the year, including holiday performances, workshops, and collaborative performances with other choirs.
Most often, the students are transported to and from the concerts by their families or in car pools.
Please note that all scheduled concerts are mandatory for all singers.
How many absences may a student have in Honor Choir and remain a member of the CISD Honor Choir?
Students can have no more than five excused absences. Many students achieve perfect attendance.
What and when is the Honor Choir Summer Camp?
Summer Camp is an opportunity for our students to meet each other, learn new songs, and learn a great deal about singing and rehearsing with us in the group. They will learn the Honor Choir processes and what to expect during the upcoming year. The 2024 Summer Camp dates will be scheduled after the school district publishes the school calendar for 2024-2025. Summer Camp is mandatory. It is imperative that every member of the CISD Honor Choir attend summer camp. Parents and guardians are always welcome to visit Summer Camp rehearsals. You will be inspired by these young people and awed by how quickly they learn. A mandatory parent/guardian meeting will be on the Friday evening during the week of Summer Camp.
How is information, dates, and news shared with Honor Choir families?
Our website will quickly become your best resource for all things Honor Choir related. It is continually updated and is the best source of information, dates, musical resources and frequently asked questions.
We also use text/SMS messaging for short, important information bursts that are sent to primary parents/guardians as reminders of important information, schedule changes, or other news that needs to be delivered quickly.
