WELCOME TO THE EMMANUEL CAREERS NEWSLETTER
Welcome to the Emmanuel Careers Newsletter. Each month the Newsletter will contain information on upcoming events and features, that I hope will be of help to students and parents.
It has been a busy term with students in Year 10 and 11 making subject selections which will start to mold the career choices they have in the near future. These are important decisions made in partnership with the school, students and parents. Students in Years 7-10 are now making choices for their electives in order to try new courses and get a feel for their career pathway.
MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICES
As early as Year 9 students need to start to consider their strengths and interests in different subject areas. Semester one in Year 10 is an important time as the grades achieved will indicate their potential and suitability in a particular course. Each course in both Years 11 and 12 have prerequisites. Students should aim to achieve the prerequisite for the courses they wish to study in their senior years.
Why have prerequisites?
These are set using historical data on student performance. This indicates that students not achieving the set perquisite are unlikely to be successful in the course. There are always exceptions. Our one on one career counselling process for all Year 10 and 11 students provides students and parents with guidance in making those all important decisions.
WORK PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Work Experience is one way for students to start to make decisions regarding their career pathway. Although many students have part time employment out of school the nature of the employment does not often reflect the career areas they wish to pursue after school. Work Experience provides an insight into the work tasks, environment and career pathways available in a career area. It is another tool to help students make decisions. Not all experiences reflect the impressions students have of a particular career.
Other experiences prove to be a perfect fit and students go on to pursue that career area. We ask all students to reflect on their experience and learn from it, assisting them to make future decisions. We have a range of options available to students at Emmanuel.
Great Work Experience
This year we had six students from Emmanuel Catholic College take part in one weeks work experience as part of the GREaT work experience program. The students applied online, supported by the school, spent a week in a local hospital getting hands on experiences in the life of a nurse.
In order to give our present Year 9 students the same opportunity next year we have a guest speaker visiting on Wednesday 26 October to make students aware of the opportunity and to answer any questions. If you are in Year 9 and have an interest in a medical or health related profession this is defiantly an opportunity you should not miss.
TRY A TRADE
Try a Trade is just that. It is an opportunity for students to have a go at a trade for three days at a trade school. The students gain new skills and experience working in a work shop environment. This year two groups of our Year 10 students visited Challenger TAFE in Rockingham to complete trade experiences in bricklaying, carpentry and tiling.
The placements do not have a cost and give students an idea of life in a trade college should they decide on this career pathway. The feedback from both students and staff at the TAFE was extremely positive and it is something we hope to continue next year.
INSTEP
Instep runs in Year 11 and 12 and is an opportunity for students to participate in work experience for one day a week. It is an endorsed program and so for each semester of work experience along with the completion of a log book and journal, students get a grade C equivalent towards their WACE certificate.

At Emmanuel Catholic College, in order to meet the requirements of the endorsed program, Instep is chosen with Careers and Enterprise.
Instep is the name of the company that manages the work placement for our students.
The program allows students to gain experiences in work areas not available to them through part time employment. It helps students to decide which subjects in school will best prepare them for their career.
Lachlan
I chose Instep as I wanted to experience what It would be like to be a Sports Teacher. I felt that this experience helped me to make decisions about the things I wanted to do after I graduate from school.
Lesieli
The experience has defiantly not changed my career goal of becoming a Primary School Teacher. It made me realise that it's hard work and I will have to put 100% in to achieving my career goals.
Abbey
I chose Instep because I thought I could have the opportunity to learn valuable new skills that employers look for. I also wanted to figure out what type of job I wanted to do in the future. I feel like I gained experience in looking after kids and how to communicate with them on an equal level. I also gained knowledge in how to entertain and comfort kids when they are bored or missing their parents.
Shannae
Shannae has completed her Instep in a Child Care Centre and in a primary school. She has also been working toward completing her Certificate II in Community Studies at South Metropolitan TAFE as a Profile Placement, one day a week. In planning her career pathway. Shannae is now looking for a School Based Traineeship for Year 12, so that she can work towards her Certificate III whilst getting more Industry experience.
