December Celebrations Around the World
World Wildlife Conservation Day (Dec 4th)
Each year on December 4th, Wildlife Conservation Day seeks to spread awareness about preserving endangered fauna and flora, and protecting the natural world and its inhabitants.
Human interference in the world’s natural ecosystem has been ongoing for centuries. In the modern world, as humans traveled and settled in different parts of the world, they cleared land for farming, cut forests for shipbuilding, and began hunting and trapping for money. Over the years, wildlife hunting and poaching became more common and wildlife populations started to decline across the globe.
In the 20th century, the black rhino population decreased by 98%. Though still critically endangered, this species is up to 5,600 today from a bleak 2,500 due to efforts to deter poaching.
There are only nine existing wild populations of Sumatran orangutans left on the entire island of Sumatra.
With a global population of less than 3,000, the Sumatran elephant is endangered due to threats to their habitat.
How to observe World Wildlife Conservation Day?
You can spread the word.
You can learn about the planet, its treasures, and how to protect them.
You can donate to the cause (World Wildlife Fund)
Greeley Recreation has several opportunities for family fun and to keep you active all winter long.
Winter youth and adult sports registration begins on Monday, November 21. See a list of sport offerings that begin in January, and a list of winter break camps and clinics to keep your children active over the holidays. Check out the flyers below for more community activities!

2023-24 OPEN ENROLLMENT IS NOW UNDERWAY FOR ALL SCHOOLS
Beginning Tuesday, November 1, Greeley-Evans School District 6 will accept applications for students who want to attend a school that is outside their boundary area.
Any parent or guardian interested in enrolling their child in a school outside their home boundary for the 2023-2024 school year must apply during the open enrollment period, which is November 1, 2022, through December 15, 2022. While District 6 is able to accommodate most open enrollment requests, it may not be able to approve requests for enrollment into schools, specific grade levels or special programs that are at or above capacity or cannot fulfill the specific needs of the student.
Parents will be notified via email of their student(s) open enrollment status prior to February 1, 2023. Parents have until February 28, 2023 to accept or deny an offer.
Students currently open-enrolled are eligible to stay at their current school through the highest grade offered at that school and do not need to apply yearly. Also, students approved for open enrollment to a school outside their home boundary, regardless of programming needs, will generally not be provided District 6 transportation services. Those open enrolling to the Tointon Academy of Pre-Engineering from outside the boundary may be eligible for transportation services. Anyone living outside Greeley-Evans School District 6 may open enroll into a District 6 school, but will not be eligible for district transportation.
All open enrollment applications are online. Find out more at www.greeleyschools.org/openenrollment.
