NES Principaw Updates #3 (Oct 2022)
Mr. Vince Sette and Mrs. Nicole McQuate
October Already......
It was just yesterday we greeted everyone at Open House. Now we are a good month into school and the kiddos are really settling in nicely. We have a lot of fun activities coming up in October so please make sure you double-check the upcoming events later in this newsletter.
The office is currently open from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm at the elementary.
We will begin to have different grade-level concerts throughout the year. Please refer to the letter from Mrs. Brown that was sent home to parents about our concerts during the school year. As a reminder, a grade-specific letter will be sent home as well the closer we get to your child's concert date.
Mrs. Brown's Letter for NES Concerts
Parents, please return all school forms ASAP. These are essential to ensure we have the most up-to-date information for your child. Thank you for your continued support in filling these forms out for us.
Norwayne Elementary LITERACY Spotlight
Literacy is an integral part of a student's success in school. Be on the lookout for some Literacy Parent Nights in the near future.
Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Monte
During this previous month, students have been visiting my classroom to learn student skills and develop a positive mindset towards school and their own personal goals.
We will be continuing those topics throughout our first nine weeks. During the second nine weeks, we will begin to discuss emotions and how we can manage them in a healthy way.
Some important dates this month:
Unity Day is Oct. 19th. This is a day that we celebrate being a united school for kindness!
Red Ribbon Week will begin October 24th. We will just be having our spirit day on Monday this year. Our spirit day will be a beach day! “Being Drug Free is Paradise!”
Here are the topics that we will be covering in each grade level:
Kindergarten:
1. Mistakes Are Okay (Recognizing that mistakes are a part of learning)
2. Practice Makes Better (Students will know that practicing and continuing to try will help us improve)
3. Let’s Practice and Learn (We will combine everything we learned about being a good student and keeping a positive mindset)
4. Sometimes We Feel Happy (We will learn how to identify “happy” and scenarios that make us happy)
1st Grade:
1. You did It (Students can name a skill that they have improved on)
2. Being an Upstander (Students will learn what to say or do when they see mean behavior)
3. Helpful Thoughts (Students will learn how to say positive statements to themselves)
4. We Can Do It! (Students will combine their skills of being a good student and having a positive mindset to create a picture of our class character “Pepito”.
2nd Grade:
1. What Mistakes Tell Us/The Magical Yet: Students will overcome barriers to learning by having a positive mindset using the "magical yet". Students will discuss things that they may believe they can't do. "I can't tell time." Then, change this to "I can't tell time yet.". We will learn that when we make a mistake, the mistake is telling us to try again, ask for help, or make a small change.
2. Helpful and Unhelpful Thoughts: Students will learn about positive self-talk and how it is helpful like a coach. We call this our inner coach. We will also learn about negative self-talk and how it is unhelpful and mean like a critic. We call this our inner critic. We will practice saying positive things to ourselves.
3rd Grade:
1. Practice Plan: Students will learn two additional actions to improve a skill beyond practicing and effort. They will learn that they can learn from others and try a new way. They will create their own practice plan to get better at something that they want to improve.
2. Being an Upstander: Students will learn how to practice being an "upstander" when they witness mean behavior.
3. Bubble Gum Brain: Students will identify and practice using growth mindset thoughts.
4. Why Emotions: Students will learn what our emotions are trying to tell us.
4th Grade:
1. Organization: Students will learn strategies to keep their lockers, backpacks, time, spots at home and planners organized.
2. The Brain: Students will learn about 3 important parts of their brain 1.Amygdala AKA The Guard Dog responsible for signaling an arm to tell us we are unsafe and need to fight, flight, or freeze 2. PFC AKA The wise Owl that helps us think and make smart choices. If our guard dog is barking too loud, the wise owl cannot help us. 3. Hippocampus AKA Memory Saver Elephant that is responsible for keeping our memories and learning new things. This also won't work if our guard dog is barking too loud. We will learn about how this stressed feeling is called "flipping our lid".
5th Grade:
1. What is Stress?: Students will learn what happens in their brain when they are stressed. We also call this flipping our lid and our brain does this to keep us safe. We will learn the difference between flipping our lid because we are really in danger and flipping our lid because our brain *thinks* we are in danger.. but we actually are not. Then, we can begin using coping skills to calm down once we know that we are safe.
2. Being an Upstander: Students will learn positive ways to address bullying and mean behavior from their classmates. We will learn how to be an upstander rather than a bystander when these situations occur.
You can find more information about the topics that we are learning on the Counselor Corner Site!

Tips for the Year from Mr. Sette
Transportation Department Updates
We'd like to congratulate our Bus 10 Driver Jim Starkey on his retirement this past month! We know staff and students are going to miss him. We are in the process of filling his position so you might be seeing some new faces driving bus 10.
October 17-21 is National School Bus Safety Week. This week is to promote the safety of our students and drivers as they get to and from school. Here at Norwayne our transportation team takes safety very important!
Last school year we had zero accidents and this year we aim to do the same. We are always looking for ways to improve and encourage our safety procedures. We completed our yearly bus evacuations at the end of September. Those evacuations are to teach our students what to do in an emergency if the driver is incapacitated. They are shown how to exit the bus from the front and rear and how to do so safely. They are shown where the emergency equipment on the bus is as well, like first aid kits, emergency flares, and how to use the 2-way radio. We hope all the students learned a lot from these evacuations and will feel prepared in case of an emergency!
Since Safety week is coming up, here are some tips to
remember:
* Make sure children leave home on time so they can arrive at the bus stop before it is due, ideally at least five minutes early. Running after or in front of a bus is dangerous.
* Stop and look left, right, and then left again if you must cross the street
* Have children wait in a location where the driver can see them while driving down the street.
* Warn children that if they drop something while getting on and off the bus, they should never pick it up. Instead, they should tell the driver and follow the driver’s instructions.
If you have any questions, you may reach out to Lori Weinman (Transportation Coordinator) via email (lweinman@norwayne.net) or phone(330-435-1141)
Transportation Trivia Question for October:
If you drop an item and it falls under the bus should you run after it?
Answer: No! You should never go under the bus for anything. It can put you in the driver's blind spot and then they cannot see where you are. You should let your driver know what happened and they can help you from there.
Student Handbook Talking Points
- If your child has a fever they must remain out of school for a minimum of 48 hours. They are able to return after these days as long as the last 24 hours they were fever-free without the aid of fever-reducing medication.
DRESS CODE REMINDER
- Tank tops, muscle shirts, bare midriffs, or sleeveless shirts are NOT permitted. Also, socks are to be worn at ALL times, even with sandals.
- With the weather changing it is important to remember we make every attempt to go outside for recess and students will be expected to be prepared for the weather daily.
2022-2023 NES BREAKFAST and LUNCHES
Nutritious breakfast and hot lunches are served at our school. For the 2022-2023 School Year breakfast and lunch are no longer free of charge. Milk is available for purchase for those carrying their own lunches. Lunch and milk prices are established annually by the Norwayne Board of Education and can be found noted below. If your child is going to eat a school lunch regularly, we encourage you to send in money for lunches weekly or monthly. Please put your money in an envelope with the student's name and teacher on it or use the online payment system to add money to their account.
Please note that there is now only a $10.00 charge limit in the lunchroom. Norwayne Local Schools have enrolled in https://www.payforit.net/. This service provides parents with a secure, fast, and convenient way to view and manage student lunch activities. Parents can sign up for low-balance notifications, can view students' balances, and deposit money into their children's meal accounts. Note there is a transaction fee for online student deposits. Parents can also send payments to school with their children. Please make checks payable to Norwayne Elementary School.

OCTOBER STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Mrs. Kosier
- This is my 14th year at Norwayne. I currently teach 2nd grade. I started out as a Title Tutor and have also taught 3rd grade and Preschool.
- I love having the opportunity to watch students learn and grow. Having the same students over a whole school year is so rewarding when I witness them making progress and learning new things. It excites me to see them excited to learn new things each and every day!
- There are a lot of little funny moments when you are with young kids every day. But, the Sumo Wrestling match was definitely a fun activity to watch!
- ALWAYS do your best and try your hardest! This goes for school, sports, and everything in life. Also, BE KIND to everyone!
Mrs. Leone
This is my 8th year teaching at Norwayne Elementary School.
- I love the energy that my students bring to my classroom every day. I really enjoy making connections with my students and helping them find skills and strategies that help them find success both inside and outside of the classroom. Our bobcats are the best!
- The first year of teaching third grade Mrs. Hare and my students surprised me for my birthday with a pounding on my door and bursting in with birthday treats. The pounding on the door came so out of the blue and so loudly that I jumped and couldn't stop laughing at myself for being so jumpy!
- I would give my students the advice to always work hard and believe in themselves. You can achieve all that you dream of if you are willing to put in the effort and perseverance.
Mrs. Dutter
- This is my 8th year.
- I love that I get to be creative alongside my students and that I get to see and hear all their different ideas about art!
- There have been so many funny memories from all the different spirit days, holidays, and time spent working with my specials team but one that I won't forget happened during my first year of teaching. Mrs. Sparks, Mrs. Albaugh, Mrs. Suppes and I stayed late into the night, attempting to build part of a haunted house with a big roof outside of the office for Halloween. We got in way over our heads and ultimately the whole thing failed and was never actually used as decoration but we have had some laughs thinking back on it since then!
- As I tell every class, every day: Don't give up and keep practicing. Remember that what matters most is that you try your best!
