Campus Connections

Message from Jeff and Yolanda
February is Career and Technical Education month and across the state and county the value of CTE and the achievements and accomplishments are being celebrated. Governor Scott sent a CTE Proclamation to be shared with staff and students.
This past week, our staff and students engaged in numerous community activities that helped promote CTE.
- On Thursday, Anne Fredette held Project Explore’s Annual Meet and Greet at Moorings Park. Students spent weeks working on their presentation skills, interviewing skills, and organization skills. According to Ann, the project gives them confidence and the ability to believe in themselves. Parents, Moorings Park residents and staff had an opportunity to meet students and find out about their goals, talents and the work they do at Moorings Park. Project Explore is an LWTC program based at Moorings Park and is open to adults with disabilities. Students in the program are matched with a mentor and they do everything from preparing meals for residents and doing laundry to working with the physical therapists, leading activities and helping in the business office. The idea is to give the students the opportunity to develop career abilities while cultivating interpersonal skills essential to the workplace. Upon completion from Project Explore some students are able to successfully transition to an on campus LWTC tech program.
- Tony Singleton and his students have spent a considerable amount of time preparing for the move of the Saberliner from Paige Field in Fort Myers to LWTC. It was no easy feat but so much learning took place with students learning about defueling procedures, non-essential circuit breakers versus essential circuit breakers and aircraft transport protocols. The plane will be put into position Monday and students will then start the rebuilding process. The move could not have been possible without the Naples Jet Center, Page Field, and students. Of course, thank you also to Chris Fowler, Armando Padilla and Andy Retz for clearing the area for the aircraft to be moved into its new home. Aviation students can now receive training on large aircraft and fulfill the new 147 FAR requirements. Over the coming weeks, stop by and take a look at LWTC’s newest aircraft.
- Cindy Emanuel and students spent Saturday volunteering at the annual ‘Give Kids A Smile Day’ . Services such as oral hygiene instructions, dental cleanings, x-rays, dental sealants and dental examinations were offered to children at no cost.
- Joann Cassio, along with Entrepreneur students, attended the the “Cars on 5th” event. Students promoted their Jams Fast Fruit company and sold fruit while Joann gave out promotional LWTC items.
- On Saturday, Adult Education teachers engaged in an all-day professional development activity focused on the integration of ESL, ABE, GED and CTE content using academic, CTE and work-readiness standards and employing project- or problem-based learning focused on “real-world” issues relevant to students’ lives and interests. Relevant math programs were created using the career cluster.

Ever look down and realize that you are holding a half-eaten snack in your hand? You might not have even noticed that you were eating anything. Is there a pattern to when you crave sugar or salty treats? Emotional eating can be the reason for this. February is the month of ‘love’, however; it can also be the month of emotions (both positive and negative). This month we will be looking at emotional eating and how and why it happens.
Here is a quiz to see if you could be an emotional eater. More to come each week this month.
