Guidelines for recess during the winter months:
Hello JSA Families,
Winter weather has arrived and we wanted to send some friendly reminders! Please make sure your student is dressed for the change in temperature as Johnson STEAM Academy aligns with District practices for winter recess for our students.
Guidelines for recess during the winter months:
- As temperatures change throughout the day, we encourage students to come with a coat, hat and gloves / mittens daily.
- If the temperature is below 10 with or without the wind-chill, we will have an indoor recess.
- If the temperature is between 0 and 10, the teacher may make a decision to take students out for a short period of time (no more than 10 minutes) to get some fresh air and exercise.
- If there is snow on the ground, students are encouraged to have boots or extra shoes to play on the equipment or go in areas where the snow is deeper.
- If snow is deeper than boots can provide coverage for (1-2” above ankles so it doesn’t hit the boot line) students must have both boots and snow pants to play in those areas of playground.
- We work to have the blacktop plowed by District personnel as soon after a snowfall as possible. Students may play on the blacktop with or without boots, however, boots are always encouraged in the winter months.
If there are questions about school closures or late starts due to winter weather, please check local news stations, the Cedar Rapids Community School District website or the JSA website.
Along with winter weather come the winter holidays, please make sure your calendars reflect JSA, and all District schools, ARE IN SESSION next Monday and Tuesday. CRCSD schools, including Johnson, are closed for the Thanksgiving break next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Please feel free to contact the school with any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Candace Lynch, Principal

Next PTA Meeting:
December 3, 2018
Hello Johnson Steam Academy Families,
The PTA would like to share some information on upcoming fundraiser and staff appreciation efforts.
First- please be watching for some information to come home for our HyVee Coupon Book Fundraiser. The fundraiser will run from Monday November 26th through Friday December 7th with coupon books being delivered the week before Winter Break. Coupons will be valid from the day you receive them until the end of 2019. All students will earn prizes for selling the coupon books and we are asking that all families try to at least sell 1 or 2 coupon books. This is an amazing fundraiser for our school as each $10 coupon book sold earns $7 for the school! The money raised from the PTA fundraisers supports events like Harvest Hoopla, Winter Dance, Blues and BBQ and also supports the SeeSaw App and some of the costs of the Enrichment Programs!
Second- the PTA will be setting up a Holiday Wish List display in the school lobby. If you would like to show your appreciation to the amazing teachers and staff at JSA this holiday season, but don't really know what to get for them... stop by the display and grab a wish list for your specific teacher / staff member! We've collected lists of some of their favorite things and also some supplies that they could use for their classrooms.
Thank you for your support and have a great day!
