What you can do with Bromine

Bromine (Br) is used for a handful of different things. One of its uses are as dyes, it gives Tyrian purple its very vibrate color. Another way to use it is as pesticides, sometimes the pesticide could be washed into a drinking source and get the drinker poisoned. Bromine has many more uses such as fumigants, fire-retardent materials, medicine, and many more.

Bromine (Br)

Comes from the Greek word bromos (stench)

Who discovered it?

Discovered by Antoine Balard and Carl Lowig. Antoine Balard is a chemist from France. He was born on September 30,1802 in Montpellier,France. Carl Lowig is also a chemist but is from Germany. He was born on March 17,1803 in Bad Kreuznach,Germany.

Discovered in 1826. Antoine Balard was investigating salty water in France. He evaporated the water, leaving in some residue. He then but some chlorine gas into it, and found reddish-brown liquid. Carl Lowig made a sample of bromine from a natural spring, and showed his professor.

Bromine Compounds

Bromine Fluoride: BrF

Bromine Trifluoride: BrF3

Bromine Pentafluoride: BrF5

Bromine Dioxide: BrO2

Dibromine Oxide: Br2O

Chemical Reaction Equation: 2 Al (s) + 3 Br2 (1) = 2AlBr3 (s)

Dangers of Bromine

Bromine can get into water, food, and the air. If you eat or breathe in bromine you could get very sick. Physical contact with bromine could cause memory loss, drowsiness, mood swings, breathing problems, diarrhea, and rashes.
