Counselor's Corner

I have finished up with lessons on personal space and safety. I will begin lessons on conflict resolution with students.

PK - We will work on effective communication skills and discuss the concept of belonging using “The Little Spot of Belonging” book. Students will practice asking and answering questions by playing with each other in tossing a ball with a partner.

K/1st - Students will learn and use conflict resolution skills by choosing different solutions to problems in a game with the class.

2nd - Students will continue to learn conflict resolution skills and communication skills. A discussion will be held about filtering our thoughts. The book “Being Frank” will be read and aid in conversation. Students will practice and decide if different thoughts can be filtered (changed) to facilitate better understanding and communication with others.

3rd - Students will watch a State Farm clip twice. The first time they are just listening to the tone of voices and a discussion will be held about the feelings they hear in the voices. The second time they will watch and listen. A discussion will be held about what they are seeing and hearing and how the tone of voice used helps others to understand how we feel. Students will practice changing their tone of voice in different situations.

4th - Students will learn about I-Messages and practice using them in different situations to help in conflict resolution.

5th - Students will review I-Messages and then play a game using their knowledge to help with conflict resolution.

We continue to be available to all students upon request. If you have any questions or concerns, you are welcome to contact us at the emails listed below, or use the attached form.

Caught Being a Leader!

Click HERE to see this week's leaders!

Students cannot only be caught being a leader at school by staff, but also at home by you! If you see your child exhibiting any of the habits on their own without prompting, fill out this form! Examples: Habit 3: Put First Things First - Your child went to a quiet area in your home and began doing their homework without being told. Habit 5: Seek First To Understand, Then To Be Understood - Your child listened to their sibling’s point of view during an argument, understood why their sibling was upset, and did not push their own opinion of what happened or interrupt.

Students that are caught being a leader will have their name announced on the morning announcements and will be able to choose a charm for their Leader In Me Chain. Students proudly wear their chains to our Campus Awards.

Coach's Corner

PreK-2nd

We are continuously working on their overall conditioning, endurance and flexibility. Circuit Training/Stations was introduced this week. This provided the students with a chance to rotate within their 6 exercise stations and also run half a line when instructed. One section of the gym the students used their own muscles as resistance by flexing their muscles during the assigned exercise. During cool down the students stretched and or walked around the gym. On one rotation day for the cool down, a team building drill was done by tossing a ball around within the station circle. The goal was not to have the ball hit the floor.

We will always work with you regarding if your child or children need to sit out in PE due to a medical reason. A note must be provided for documentation. There will be activities we do in PE that may be difficult. We are just wanting the students to try their best and with practice they will get better. If they do not try they will not get better.

Caught Reading

LaCoste Elementary students often go above and beyond! With that in mind, we love to acknowledge when they do. Reading is an important everyday activity. It shows great examples of the Leadership Habits we know are the foundation of our success. We like to “Catch Students Reading”. Examples of that would be; students independently choosing to read as a leisure activity or students achieving a reading goal they had set for themselves, like finishing their first chapter book or reading their first book independently. Parents can also "Catch Students Reading" at home! Please click the button below to submit your child's name for the drawing.

Each week a name is randomly drawn from those submissions. Their name is displayed on a bulletin board in the library, given a prize for their accomplishment, mentioned in our morning campus announcements and posted in our Parent Newsletter.

This week’s winner is Henry Patton!

He was caught reading by his mom. Henry chose to read on his way to school!
