Week of December 2, 2019

Report Cards

Report cards will be carried home on Tuesday, December 3. Teachers will hand them out during seventh period. Please ask your student for the report card. The report cards do not contain the Star Reading scores since they are not a current reflection of the score. Students used to take the Star Reading test in November, but we are trying to reduce the amount of testing and stress. They will take the assessment again in February.

Cancellations & Early Closure

Zero period and Breakfast Club are cancelled this Tuesday, December 3. Academic Support after school on Thursday, December 5, in cancelled. The office will close early at 1:50 pm on Thursday, December 5.

Graduation Letter

8th grade students will be bringing home a letter early this week that needs a parent/guardian signature. It goes over the behavior and grade expectations for all of the end of year activities and the graduation ceremony. This letter is due by Friday, December 13, to your student’s science teacher. (Graduation is on Friday, June 5, 2020 at 6 pm on the Kennedy field). The letter is attached below for your convenience.

Administrators will be meeting with students this week and next week who are below or close to the cumulative 2.0 gpa requirement to walk the stage. We will setup regular check-ins and ways to make sure they have extra support. These students will have an extra letter that needs a signature so that families know these students need to step up their efforts in second and third trimester.

Winter Concert

Join us this Thursday night, December 5, for our annual Winter Concert. We have over 250 students, one-third of our school, taking part in this event! There will be food, drinks, and raffle tickets for sale. The blacktop will be open for parking starting at 6 pm.

Principal's Coffee

Due to the school tour this Thursday, the next Principal’s Coffee will be on Thursday, December 12 at 8:30 am. I will share the data from our first Language Arts IAB that students took at the end of October, an update on social emotional learning, and RCSD police have been invited to come answer any kinds of questions you might have.

We were hoping our new librarian would start this Monday, but HR still doesn’t know who it will be yet, so as soon as we find out we will let you know. Once this new person starts, the library will be open at brunch and lunch each day for the students to enjoy. (The library has not been open at brunch, so this will be a new change for students).

Congratulations again to our newly retired librarian Jan McCormick. Here is a short piece about Jan’s involvement in the Redwood City School District over the years:

Jan’s first job in the Redwood City School District was in 1998 with the transportation department. She was a school bus driver as well as a state of California certified school bus instructor. She went into the library system in 2006 at Hoover Elementary school as a full-time employee. A few years later she was part time at Hoover and Kennedy. About 6 years ago she became the fulltime librarian at Kennedy.

After 21 years Jan decided it was time to retire. She has a husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren that she will now be able to spend more time with. Both her and her husband are involved with The American Legion and do volunteer projects for the veterans. One project that stands out is Christmas morning they go to the veterans hospital and sing as well and bring gifts.

Jan is also a Shrine Lady who has given many hours to projects that benefit the Shrine Hospital in Sacramento, California. This coming year she will be the leader for their court, which means she will be spending many hours visiting the hospital and promoting the wonderful things that the Shrine ladies and men do for the Shriner Hospital. She shared that it is amazing what the doctors have done for many children at no cost to the families.

Extra Shirts

We are looking for gently used long and short sleeve shirts that you don’t want anymore to use for dress code issues. (No red shirts please). It’s okay if they are a bit big. They are not meant to be stylish. Please wash them and donate them to the office.

SamTrans Survey

Do you or your child ride the SamTrans bus to work or school? Would you like to see more bus routes in Redwood City? SamTrans is currently analyzing all of its routes which will result in a new bus system in 2021. Weigh in with your ideas by taking the Reimagine SamTrans survey below.

GMRT Letter

GMRT testing is this week. 8th grade students received a letter before break with details about high school placement testing. In case your student was absent, the letter is attached below. For more information for incoming high school students, visit the Sequoia Union High School District website. See the picture below that shows you where to go for information on their website regarding incoming students.

For high school, families have to provide proof of residence. Normally you have to bring this information to their District Office. While you can still do this, they are trying to make it more convenient for families, so on Thursday, January 23, 2020, from 5:30-7:00 pm, they will be in the Kennedy library.
