Prestwick LEArns - Scientist of the Week in 1st grade
Scientist of the Week is designed to get our students excited about science and to become the scientist themselves. It is also a way for us to assess each student on TEKS that might be difficult to assess in a daily classroom setting such as following home safety procedures and using age-appropriate tools to investigate the natural world.
Every class has a Scientist of the Week bag containing:
- A journal (where students will record their project)
- A pair of goggles
- An apron
- A letter to the Parents
- Worksheet to record data
Every Friday the teacher selects the Scientist of the Week. The student has that weekend and the following week to think of and practice an experiment within the guidelines set by the teacher. They will also think of a Scientist name. They will need to do this experiment at home with supervision of their parent/guardian and record data. They will glue their data sheets into the journal. The following Friday they are required to bring in all of their supplies and perform their experiment for the class. The student will tell their classmates their hypothesis and the steps they took.

Staff Spotlight
Howdy, Lobos!
For this week’s staff spotlight, PSA would like to honor and recognize our School Resource Officer (SRO), Officer J.P. Alexander, or as many know him, Officer J.P. Officer J.P. has been with the City of The Colony Police Department for 15 years and has served as a SRO with Little Elm ISD for the past 4 years.
As a SRO, Officer J.P.’s top priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff. Officer J.P. is a vital member of our Campus Emergency Team. Some of Officer J. P.’s responsibilities include campus security, first responder, active monitoring of the campus, as well as assisting with traffic flow. One of the things that Officer J.P. loves about being a SRO is building positive relations with students. One of the missions as the SRO is to serve as a bridge between youth and police relations.
Officer J.P. has received several special police trainings related to patrol, school safety, and detective work. He has also attended Basic SRO training, Texas Association School of Resource Officers (TASRO) Conference, and this summer, he will be attending the National Association School Resource Officers (NASRO) Conference held in Reno, NV. These conferences consist of SROs from around the nation gathering together to discuss school safety and the best way to prevent and stop threats aimed at the school.
PSA would like to thank Officer J.P. for his service to our community, staff, and students!
