May Newsletter
Spring weather is finally here and we are looking forward to many upcoming outdoor events at Nayatt School. The entire student body and staff participated in Project ACES (All Children Exercising Simultaneously) on Tuesday. Ms. Scanlon led everyone in a fun-filled dance and exercise. To continue Physical Education and Health Week, all children at Nayatt will have the opportunity to participate in a school-wide fitness and health event during the annual Jog-A-Thon on Friday, May 8th. Be sure to remind children to wear fitness clothes and bring a non-perishable food item to school to donate to the Barrington Tap In. We would like to thank you very much for your thoughtful acknowledgements for Teacher's Appreciation Week. We also appreciate all of you for your dedication to education and your support of learning throughout the year.

Reading
Our students have been making amazing progress in reading throughout the year. In the month of May, we will be working on sequencing events and understanding/analyzing characters. We will encourage students to learn about characters in books by thinking about the things they say and their actions. Toward the middle and end of the month, we will work on comprehension skills such as comparing and contrasting and taking a close look at the text features of an informational text. Throughout the month, we will strengthen skills in fluency and vowel patterns.
Writing
First Grade young authors are really blooming this month! What fun they have been having writing their own personalized online Theme Poems in library and on the Netbooks & Chromebooks in our classrooms. Read Write Think.org is a fabulous interactive online tool where students are fully engaged writing poems based on shapes from five different categories: Nature, School, Sports, Celebrations, and Shapes. Students are learning to focus their writing on a particular topic or theme as they brainstorm, write, revise, and their poems. Children also have the option to print their final draft poems so that they may illustrate and save them. Shhhh…. it's a secret but many Moms should be on the lookout for some very heartfelt poems that may be coming your way in celebration of your very own Mother's Day.
Math
Module 5 has been very exciting for first graders! In this geometric module students have been sorting, analyzing, comparing, and creating two and three-dimensional shapes, and putting them together to create new shapes. They are also discussing ideas like “whole”, “half” and “fourths” and comparing fractions with greater than, less than, and equal to. In addition we are learning about telling time to the half hour and using the idea of a half circle to determine this. In our up-coming module (Module 6) all of our learning this year will come together and we will continue our focus on place value, addition, and subtraction within 100, as well as continuing our study with money and coins. It is a great time to encourage your child to keep practicing their fact fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.
