The Westward Expansion at 1850

Also known as Manifest Destiny

The Compromise of 1850

The provisions of the Compromise of 1850 expanded and limited the United States at the same time. It limited the country by officially making the Rio Grande the Texas border from Mexico. It expanded by letting in California as a free state, in courtesy of Texas being a slave state.

The Compromise of 1850 mainly discussed the issue with slavery in the nation. The Confederate states wanted to keep slavery, while the Union wanted to abolish slavery. This compromise agreed with Texas by letting it be a slave state and introducing California as a free state so that it would balance out the court when states come to vote.
