October 20, 2017
I hope those of you who have reservations for PAC tonight will have a wonderful evening--kids playing and adults have adult time. Sounds like a win-win!!! Thank you to our PTO for making the event possible!
It is amazing that next week is our last full week of October! This means that Friday, October 27, will be our Spirit Wear Day (Go, Mustangs!) and Chick-fil-a Biscuits!!! Also, please add to your calendars our International Night and Mini Silent Auction on November 3. This is an AWESOME night!!
I do want to remind everyone that not only do we want courtesy in our afternoon dismissal car rider lines but also in the mornings. Please remember that students should exit the automobile on the passenger side. This is for your child's safety. Again, everyone please drive slowly and watch carefully for our little human beings. Even one small accident will be horrific for our children.
Please note that in our afternoon car rider for Kindergarten, 4th and 5th grades that we are trying a new traffic pattern with two (2) lanes of traffic (left lane beginning prior to sharp curve at wall) as we must leave space for buses to exit. You can even help by placing yourselves with Kindergarten cars in the left lane and 4th/5th grades in right lane. Do not panic if you can't get to that lane. We will continue to assist with splitting the traffic for different grade levels there at the entrance to the loop. You have done a wonderful job in working with us for two days. Thank YOU!
Please have a wonderful weekend--ride a bike, play some ball, and read a great book with your child!
Yours truly,
Jan Fickling, Principal of Midway Elementary

NOVEMBER 10, 2017 VETERAN'S DAY PARADE AND CEREMONY
Students are encouraged to invite a veteran (a family member, close family friend or neighbor) as their special guest to participate in this event honoring our local veterans and service people. Midway will also create a “Wall of Honor” to display in our school so that our students will have a better understanding of all of the people that serve or have previously served our country – branch, rank, main job duties, tours, recognitions, etc. We would like students that have invited a guest to complete the “Wall of Honor” information sheet attached. Extra forms can be picked up from the front office or printed on white paper from the newsletter email. Students should return the page to the office by November 3 so that the wall display can be created before November 10.
The Mustang family invites you to participate in Midway’s International Parade of Nations on Friday, November 3, 2017, following the morning announcements. We want to celebrate the diversity and cultural heritage of our wonderful students and their families. Students may wear traditional clothing from their country and/or bring a country flag to wave as they parade through the hallways. The parade is open to all of our fabulous students, and we encourage you to join in the celebration. We will also be singing “Hello to All the Children of the World” as we greet one another. For those who wish to join in the festivities, please meet in the cafeteria at 7:45 a.m.
Also remember that later the same evening, November 3, 2017, the amazing Midway PTO is sponsoring International Heritage Night from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. We hope to see you there.

21 days of Reading Challenge
The number one way you can help your child with their learning is to read at home! The research is there. So I challenge each of you this month to embark on this challenge. 21 days of reading with and/or to your child. Life can get so busy, but taking just a few minutes each day to sit next to your child and read a book will show them how important reading is, but also how important they are.
Sign up here: http://www.readaloud.org/21daychallenge.html
And take pictures! I'll be participating in this challenge both at Midway, reading aloud to classes, and at home with my own little person. Use the #21dayReadAloud and #MES21dayReadAloud
Let's get reading!

Midway participates in the Great Southeast ShakeOut Earthquake Drill
The Great Southeast ShakeOut earthquake drill was Thursday morning in South Carolina and seven other states.
The drill comes amid Earthquake Awareness Week in the Palmetto State. Governor Henry McMaster proclaimed October 15 to 21 as Earthquake Awareness Week. Our Mustangs practiced how to stay safe during an earthquake.
- DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees;
- COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand, as you crawl for shelter under a nearby table or desk;
- HOLD ON to your shelter with one hand until shaking stops (remain on your knees and covering your head and neck with your other arm and hand).
Congratulations to our Midway Donors Choose Funding Recipients!
