Some major cities in the Coastal Plains are Dallas and Houston. These cities also have professional sports teams such as

Some more major cities are Austin and San Antonio. The Coastal Plains is the largest region in Texas. It even extends beyond Texas's borders. The elevation in the Coastal Plains is quite low, only around 1,000 feet above sea level. The Coastal Plains has many tropical storms. The Gulf of Mexico brings moisture to the coast area. One of the biggest tropical storms the Coastal Plains has ever had is a huge hurricane that hit Galveston in 1900. That hurricane killed around 6,000 people. More recently, there was a tropical storm in 2001 that hit Allison. It brought heavy rains, flooding, and large damage to Houston and other parts of the region. The Coastal Plains is home to Texas A&M in the College Station area, located in the Post Oak Belt. The Coastal Plains is devided into 5 sections called the Gulf Coast Plains, the South Texas Plains, the Piney Woods, the Post Oak Belt, and the Backland Prairie.
