Mattos Family Update
December 18, 2023
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 22: EARLY DAY FOR GRADES 1-5
Happy Holidays and New Year!
Dear Mattos Families,
What a year 2023 has been! Some of my favorite highlights this past year was Founders' Day 2023 where we recognized so many amazing volunteers at Mattos! Later in the spring we held our annual Mattos Marathon and raised funds which has led to so many opportunities this school year. Our partnership with the Math Science Nucleus was reintroduced and with that came science docents! In May, staff welcomed families back to Open House for the first time since pre-COVID. It was a night celebrating all the wonderful work throughout campus. After many years, the new 4th/5th playground was completed and has been fun for all. This school year, we had families from across FUSD join our community through the science magnet process (2 full kinder classes!). Staff introduced S.O.A.R. to students and our S.A.M.'s Nest is busy as ever each week. The consistency of behavior expectations across campus has greatly improved. Our outdoor learning space is improving each month (caterpillars keep finding their way), our makerspace is opening in January (click here to volunteer), and students have begun year long projects focusing on science (see the mural on room 2 which captures the focus for each grade). Traditions like the Holiday Sing Along brought our community together (the kinders dancing was my favorite part of the night) and the night also brought in funds for the return of science camp (just a month away!).
As we look forward to 2024, I want to thank you for making 2023 a year of rebuilding and growing at Mattos. In the year and a half that I've had the privilege of being a part of the Mattos community, I'm in awe of what we all have been able to accomplish together. I look forward to what 2024 has in store and thank you for allowing me to share in the incredible journey.

Attendance Matters
As we prepare to take time off from school (December 26 - January 7) for the winter break, we are grateful for everyone who has helped to restore a routine for showing up to school while supporting students and families. Daily routines are essential for reducing stress and creating a sense of security, especially after the chaotic transitions experienced over the last two years. As long as your child is healthy, please encourage showing up to class when school is in session. Every day of school is an important opportunity for students to learn as well as connect to peers and their teachers.
Instructional Calendar- Please do not schedule vacations during the 180 instructional days.
