~ACADEMIC SERVICES~

Emerging Literacy Project Underway

On May 11th, training for two select teachers and teacher assistants from the Chinn and Hawthorn Essential Skills Classrooms took place a t District Office. This was the official start for an Emerging Literacy Project which Park Hill is participating in. The Emerging Literacy Project is a national research study through the University of Kansas Department of Special Education. Dr. Elizabeth Kozleski is the Principal Investigator in this research project which is focused on trying to bridge the gap between self-contained students and non-disable peers when it comes to effective literacy instruction. Kate Guier (Hawthorn) and Sarah Cohalla (Chinn) were the two teachers selected to implement this project. Both teachers will be working with two students who have been screened and approved through the University, school district and parents. A brand new curriculum and specialized resource (Early Literacy Skills Builder) are being used by our staff which is very detailed and procedurally driven. As the 2016-17 school year gets underway more updates on the progress of this study will be provided.
