Glengary Gazette
Back to School Edition 2022-2023

Welcome Back to School
Dear Glengary Families,
On behalf of the staff of Glengary Elementary School, welcome back to the 2022-2023 school year. I hope that everyone remains healthy and that you had time to relax and enjoy the summer with family and friends. This year marks my seventh at Glengary and my fourteenth in education. I look forward to serving our students, staff, and community again this year. It will be an outstanding year full of academic and social success.
Glengary works very hard to create meaningful relationships with our students and families. Getting to know all of our students and families is a top priority. We look forward to your partnership and thank you for your help in making this school year a success!
Warmly,
RosaLeigh Johnson, Principal

Action Items Before School Begins

All Families MUST Complete the Online Back to School Registration Packet
Each school year, parents/guardians must complete our back-to-school “packet” on Skyward Family Access (also referred to as registration).
This is different from enrollment and is required for both new and previous students. Online registration is when parents/guardians update student information, emergency contacts, and provide other necessary information.
The registration window opened August 1, 2022 and must be completed prior to August 19, 2022 in order to see your child’s classroom assignment. Click on the link below to get started!
For bilingual assistance, contact Kallee Iverson at kalleeiverson@wlcsd.org or (248) 956-2093.
A Skyward Family Access parent account is required to complete the Online Back-to-School Packet. To acquire a new or lost parent account code, email FamilyAccess@wlcsd.org or call (248) 956-2190. Include ALL of the following information in the body of your message.
Guardian name
The name of each child in the district and school they attend
Guardian's email address that is currently on file with the district
Daytime phone number
Questions and Support
If you have trouble with the Back-to-School packet, visit the Troubleshooting & FAQ page.
If you still have issues, contact familyaccess@wlcsd.org. Include your name, the student's name, and the specific question you have.
.
MUST BE COMPLETED BY ALL STUDENTS PRIOR TO THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. You will not receive your child's classroom placement until the Family Access Packet is complete.
Enrollment
All new families should complete the online enrollment process ASAP. You will receive an email confirmation once your enrollment has been processed.
It is very IMPORTANT that new families enroll ASAP. Each new enrollment impacts class sizes and the number of sections per grade. If you know of any families in the Glengary attendance area with incoming kindergarten or new students, please encourage them to register ASAP.
If you have questions about enrollment, please contact Student Services at 248-956-2085 or 248-956-2086. You can also contact our main office for help.
Dismissal Plan for 2022-2023
Part of the back-to-school packet requires each family to complete a Dismissal Form to let us know your child's dismissal routine. This is a very important form that must be completed for each student. Please be sure you have either completed the form via the back-to-school online registration packet or by using the link below.
Thank you for your help with this task!

Classroom Placement and Release of Class Lists: August 19th after 4:00 p.m.
Classroom/teacher assignments will be posted on Skyward Family Access after 4:00 pm on August 19th. Please remember that our top priority is to develop balanced classrooms that will give all of our children the best opportunity for success this year. Our staff worked extremely hard on classroom placement throughout the Spring and Summer. Thank you for trusting us with this important process.
Once class assignments are posted on Skyward on the 19th, we will not make changes.
Please plan on logging into Skyward Family Access after 4:00 on August 19th.
Directions are linked below.
Meet & Greet - Thursday, August 25
We hope you are able to join us for our Meet and Greet on Thursday, August 25th from 4-5 p.m. Classrooms will be open and students will be able to meet the Glengary staff, drop off school supplies and enjoy popsicles on the playground provided by our PTA. The Glengary PTA will be available to assist with PTA membership questions. The Glengary office will be open during this time if you need to drop off medications for your child with a completed Authorization to Administer Medication Form .
***Please Note: Teachers first required work day is 8/24 and they will be engaged in professional learning for the majority of the day. I have assured teachers that it is NOT the expectation that classrooms are completely ready for the Meet & Greet. Thank you for understanding!
First Day of School: Monday, August 29th
School begins for all students on Monday, August 29th. This will be a FULL DAY of school for grades 1-5. Kindergarten will run on a staggered start for the first day of school. (Additional information for K staggered start below).
We kindly ask that families do not walk their child into the building on the first day of school. Our staff will be outside, welcoming students into the building. Again, we respectfully ask that families do not walk their child into the building on the first day of school but rather, that they say their goodbyes and give their hugs before drop off. We will have additional support staff assisting our Kindergarten students.
Curriculum Nights 9/13 & 9/14
Each year we encourage our families to attend Curriculum Night, as this is an important opportunity to learn about what your child's educational journey will look like this year. Please see the dates and times below.

Glengary PTA Information

This year, the PTA is excited to use their own communication platform to help organize important information all in one place. A Message from our PTA President
I am Alison Burke and I am your PTA President! As a working mom of 3, (with a second grader and 2 older daughters – one entering her Junior year at Northern and the other we moved off to GVSU this year!!!). I appreciate how fast time goes and that there are only a few opportunities we have help enrich our children’s educational experience.
The PTA has been a way for me to be involved at the school and with the community, get to know the people they are spending so much time with and have a say in the events they are participating in. I was an active member of the PTA for my daughters (at Guest) and have planned many events over the years. I have been impressed by how our community has pulled together to make events happen over the last couple of years – I am proud to have been part of that process! I look forward to working with as many of you as I can! I am hoping for a year full of events and fundraising for our school and building on our amazing community.

Food Service Update - Breakfast & Lunch for 2022-23

Food Service Update - Breakfast & Lunch for 2022-23
During the 2022-2023 school year, breakfast and lunch will NO LONGER BE FREE for ALL students. It will only be free (or reduced) for those who qualify.
Congress voted not to extend the waiver which provided free breakfast and free lunch for all students. The waiver ended June 30, 2022.
Your family may qualify for free meals or for reduced-price meals. You can complete a free and reduced lunch application during registration in August.
If you do not qualify for free or reduced meals, you may begin depositing money into student accounts at any time to prepare for the cost of school lunches next year. Information on meal prices for the 2022-2023 school year are listed below
Breakfast costs
- $1.50 for Elementary
- $1.75 for Middle/High School
Lunch costs
- $3.00 for Elementary
- $3.25 for Middle/High School
If your student has a negative lunch account balance, we encourage you to pay it off as soon as possible and then begin depositing money into the account to prepare for the 2022-2023 school year.
Your family may qualify for free meals or for reduced-price meals. Reduced-price is $.30 for breakfast and $.40 for lunch. Completing an application is the only way to be considered for free or reduced meals next school year. Please take action now. You can complete the online free and reduced meal application located in Family Access once registration is open.
This free and reduced meal application information is critical in determining the amount of money that the District receives from a variety of State and Federal supplemental programs like Title I A, At-risk (31a), Title II A, E-Rate, etc.
These supplemental programs have the potential to offer supports and services for our students including, but not limited to:
- Instructional supports (staff, supplies & materials, etc.)
- Non-instructional services (counseling, social work, health services, etc.)
- Professional Learning for staff
- Parent and Community engagement supplies and activities
- Technology
- Pandemic-EBT
Our food service department is asking families to complete and submit the free and reduced meal application as soon as possible to ensure that additional funding for our school is available to meet the needs of our students. All information on the application submitted is confidential.
Please contact Anne Merchant at 248-956-3081 or at annemerchant@wlcsd.org with questions.

Romeo: Glengary's Therapy Dog
In the Fall of 2021, Glengary Elementary welcomed its first ever therapy dog named Romeo! Romeo was born in October of 2020 and after completing intensive training, he joined the Glengary family. Romeo and our current Glengary students and staff have adjusted to his arrival seamlessly and we are thrilled to embark on a new school year with Romeo!
Romeo is a purebred black lab, bred specifically to be a therapy dog in schools. Research has shown that therapy dogs within a school setting not only enhance skills such as reading, but also improve emotional development. Just the presence of a therapy dog can decrease anxiety and enable students to work through issues such as anger management and other social difficulties. Introducing a non-threatening therapy dog into our school has been a key tool for forming social interactions for many of our students. Reading skills are often associated with improved academic performance and positive attitudes about school in children. Research has found that animal-assisted intervention in the form of reading aloud to a dog in a classroom setting contributes to improved skills and attitudes. There are so many benefits for a school to have its own therapy dog and we feel very fortunate to have Romeo!
For any new Glengary families, please make us aware if your child has a fear of or allergy to dogs by completing the form below. We will contact you so that we can collaborate and develop a proactive plan to meet your child’s needs.
Positivity Project
Glengary will once again partner with the Positivity Project to help foster character development among our students and instill an Other People Matter Mindset. The Positivity Project is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping America’s youth build stronger relationships by recognizing the character strengths in themselves and others. The premise is simple, but the results will be profound. Together, we will help create stronger citizens and leaders who will enhance our communities and country by internalizing the belief that “Other People Matter.”
Throughout the school year, we will use positive psychology to teach 24 character strengths. Each week, I will share resources about each strength so that you are able to reinforce this important learning at home! This week, students will begin to learn about what it means to have an Other People Matter Mindset.
Consider printing the calendar to help keep track of the character strengths we will learn each week!
HEALTH SCREENING BEFORE YOU COME TO SCHOOL
We continue to urge all families to check your child's health daily and make decisions that will help ensure we keep our students, staff and community healthy and safe.
Daily Health Checks: Please check your child(ren) daily for ANY signs of illness before attending school. Check for the following symptoms:
- Fever/Chills
- Cough
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing
- Muscle of Body Aches
- Headache
- New loss of smell or taste
- Sore throat
- Congestion
- Runny Nose
- Nausea or Vomiting
- Diarrhea
If your child has any of these symptoms, please err on the side of caution and keep them home until they are feeling better! If they have had a fever, he/she must stay home from school until he/she has been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications. If they have vomited, he/she must stay home from school for 24 hours from when vomiting has stopped, If they have a rash, they may not attend school without a doctor's note clearing them to return to school.
We appreciate your partnership as we continue to work together to keep our community healthy and safe!
Authorization to Administer Medication Form
If your child needs to have medication administered at school, parents must complete an AUTHORIZATION to ADMINISTER MEDICATION FORM.
Please click on the link to view. Print out and complete the form. Please drop it off at our main office as soon as possible. You can also email it to our secretaries Cheryl Maten or Melissa Roth.

Voluntary Student Accident Insurance
WALLED LAKE CONSOLIDATED SCHOOLS DOES NOT PROVIDE ANY TYPE OF HEALTH OR ACCIDENT INSURANCE FOR INJURIES INCURRED BY YOUR CHILD AT SCHOOL.
If your child is injured while at school, all costs are the responsibility of the parents and/or guardians. As a service to students and their families, our District is making available a student accident insurance plan for your child at a very nominal cost. The District offers this program because of trends in rising family health and dental insurance costs, increased deductibles, co-payments or lack of health or dental insurance coverage.
REASONS TO PURCHASE THIS COVERAGE:
1. Deductible and co-pays in your health plan. Many health plans have increased the amount of out-of-pocket expenses.
2. No insurance.
This plan will provide benefits for medical expenses incurred because of an accident. If you have other insurance, benefits can be applied to your deductible or co-pay. If you have no other insurance, this will become your primary accident plan.
TO PURCHASE COVERAGE ONLINE (with Visa or MasterCard) at www.1stAgency.com and then follow directions at *Find Your School*.
All questions regarding this coverage should be directed to First Agency at (269) 381-6630 or toll free at (800) 243-6298.
We are pleased to make this student accident insurance plan available.
