Mavericks Team Update
February 8, 2017
Announcements
Unfortunately, we have had several absences this week. We understand that the flu has been going around in the Kansas City area, but we do also want to make sure that students are coming to school daily when they are feeling well. We are willing to help in any way possible to get all of our students to school each day to learn. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help, if needed.
We have several attendance incentives for students. They can earn gift cards on Friday in a drawing by being at school every day that week. That’s our Strive for Five program. Also our teams compete against each other for pizza parties to see which team can have the highest attendance.
A few facts about attendance:
· The state considers 95% attendance as necessary for school success. That is missing 8 days or less in a school year.
Even 92% attendance is missing 14 days of school year.
· Less than 90% is considered deficient. That is missing more that 17 days in a school year.
85% attendance is missing about 26 days per year. (that’s more than 5 weeks)
80% attendance is missing about 35 days per year. (that 7 weeks of school)
· The state counts all absences including illness. There are no exceptions.
· The state also requires that we notify the authorities when students become chronically absent. Even sporadic absences can add up to a chronic problem.
· All minutes count. If a student is regularly late to school this will add up.

What did we do in class today?
Math: Today we will begin Unit 6: Functions. Students will work to understand that a function is a rule that assigns one input to exactly one output. Students will use function machines to work with functions. ANNOUNCEMENT: Students received an updated grade sheet today they can bring in for bonus.
ELA: On yesterday's exit pass students noted that they still were confused about what a rebuttal is. So, today we are completing a philosophical chairs activity to demonstrate what a claim, counterclaim, and rebuttal is. Then, students are identifying them in an article.
ELA (Mrs. Brown):We will be doing Unit 6 identifying the degree of meaning in words.
Social Studies: Students learned about the Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark.
