Anglo European School
Bulletin - w/c 13th September - Week 2
Belonging
The notable poet John Donne wrote in his Meditation 17 in 1623 “No man is an island, entire of itself.” The importance of belonging to a family, a team, a society, a club has never felt so important. In the last two years, we have been starved of social capital; the ability to meet in groups, share team spirit and collaborative working, and we’ve missed it. As I watched Emma Raducanu win the American Open on Saturday evening, it did not surprise me that her first desire was to battle through the crowds and share that moment with her team – her coach, her agent, her family. It means nothing if not shared with those who care about you and have shared in the training and hard work that created that moment.
We want as many of our students to feel that moment – of collaborative shared triumph, of team work and above all the feeling of belonging. This week, we will officially launch our Freshers’ Fair to Year 7. 84 extra-curricular activities are on offer and we have set Year 7 the target of them all joining one new club, society, company or team. In belonging to the team, they will build trust, understand loyalty, develop new competences beyond the taught curriculum, learn to take on responsibility, make new friends and have a lot of fun. In the summer term, AES School Production Company saw over 200 students start rehearsing for Moana. AM school, which meets at 8.40am sees hundreds of students take part in musical ensembles, choirs and orchestras. This week over 150 students turned out for football and netball trials in Year 7 and 8 and we can’t wait to see how they get on in their first fixtures this week.
Head coach of the NFL team “The Seahawks”, Pete Carroll has produced one the most consistent teams in the NFL over the past decade. He says of team dynamics, “It’s a tribal connection that people get when they operate together…they work together, they eat together, they tell stories together, they hunt together, they play together. It allows for a connection that’s energetic, that can be so powerful that you can feel the people around you, you can operate in connection with them….feel their pain, feel their joy.”
We wish all our teams, societies, companies and clubs such energy, connection and courage this term. #Team Anglo #Anglo Family.

Anglo European School are re-accredited with the International School Award
We are very pleased to announce that for the sixth time, we have been re-accredited for the International School Award from the British Council at the highest level. We are especially delighted about the recognition of our diligent work over the last two years by this eminent institution when considering the global conditions regarding travel. The British Council were particularly impressed by our visit to Russia in March 2020 and the beginning of a very precious partnership with our partner school there. They were enthused by our Anglo International Fringe Weeks and our letter writing partnerships between our KS3 students and our partner schools. In addition, our links with local schools via the Mandarin Excellence Programme were a source of praise. We have been invited to receive this prestigious award at a ceremony at the British Council offices in London in November.
We are extremely proud of this award and look forward to many more partnerships and international endeavours throughout this next three-year phase. We would like to thank parents and students alike for their great support of the school ethos despite these uncertain times and look forward to undertaking many more international projects together.
Sponsorship from the London Institute of Banking & Finance
Mr Knights, Mrs Foster and I had the great privilege of congratulating Emre Ozuaciksoz and Lekhashree Balakumar on their fantastic achievement in their lower sixth finance examinations. These two students, along with three Upper Sixth students, Ella Magyar, Luke Nutley and Lucia Fernandez (now Anglo Alumni), achieved the accolade of being named amongst the highest achieving students nationally in their Year group. All 5 students have received a £500 scholarship from the London Institute of Banking & Finance. Both Lower Sixth students expressed their desire to follow career pathways in Finance and Accountancy and previous students who followed this pathway are now developing their careers in organisations such as Barclays, HSBC, Deloitte, Thomas Reuters and Goldman Sachs.
Those with keen memories will remember that in the last two years, 3 of our students have previously been named as having achieved the highest scores nationally and this year, our expectations were further surpassed by 5 of our students achieving the same notoriety in the Diploma in Financial Studies (DipFS) qualification. Many congratulations to you all!
You are a great credit to our new International Enterprise Academy.

Swimming Achievement
Congratulations to Year 9 student Louis Allen, who has been selected to attend Phase 1 of the Swim England Swimming National Development Programme for 2021-2022. These development camps provide an opportunity to support, inspire and connect with a wide-reaching cohort of young swimmers, in their quest to achieve senior international podium success. Swimmers are selected as a national cohort from the national rankings database.
Interview with Year 9 student Oliver Beale - A Future Olympian?
We hear you are one of the fittest students in school, tell us about your sport.
A. I cycle and run. I cycle for Welwyn Wheelers where I compete in mountain bike, cyclo- cross and road bike races and timetrials. I also compete for Chelmsford Athletic Club and enjoy running longer distances up to 5K.
Tell us about your competitions
A. I have competed in the national cyclo-cross series travelling all over the country and as far away as Scotland. I also compete in local mountain bike and road races. I have won a quite a few races both on the mountain bike and cyclo-cross. I will be competing this autumn and winter on the mountain bike and cyclo-cross as well as cross-country running.
Yes, we hear you can run a bit too? How fast can you run a Parkrun (5K)?
A. I have run a couple of Parkruns around 20 minutes but I have also run sub 20 minutes on my course around Ingatestone. I enjoy running and want to improve in this area.
So, what's next this Autumn and Winter - a triathlon?
A. Yes, I would really like to do a triathlon because my running and cycling are improving all the time. However, I do need to improve on my swimming.
Are you going to the Olympics in 2028?
A. Definitely, I want to compete in the triathlon. Britain has some good triathlon teams.
What was your favourite moment from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics this summer?
A. Definitely Tom Pidcock winning the gold medal for Team GB in the mountain bike race.
Finally - what advice would you give to students who want to compete in your sports?
A. Have fun, that is really important. Also, it requires lots of hard training, so join a club so you can train and compete with others.
Additional Bank Holiday
Beady eyes may have picked up on some news forums that during the summer break, the government announced that they have legislated for an extra bank holiday on Thursday 2nd June 2022 in recognition of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. As both of these dates fall in the normal scheduled half term break, legislation has also been amended for the 2021-22 academic year to allow schools to add an additional non-pupil day so that we can benefit from extra bank holiday.
Anglo European will take this day on Friday 29th April which is the May Bank Holiday weekend in the hope that we have some lovely weather and families can benefit from a long weekend. Please note the finalised dates for this academic year below, including this amendment and the proposed dates for the following year 2022-23. We'd politely request that you note these dates, especially when booking holidays as we are not legally allowed to authorise holidays during term time.
