Elementary Schools Build a College-Going Culture
A Blanchard grade 5 student presents about her "dream" school Cal State University Channel Islands to peers during lunch time. All members of Blanchard's ASB group are required to research, prepare, and deliver a presentation of a college of their choice. Thanks to AVID-trained ASB advisor counselor Raul Perez and teacher Viviana Laureano for building a college-going culture. Blanchard is in its second year of implementation, with a total of eight trained staff including RSP teacher Lori Sanchez. Principal Vanessa Donahue will be adding her third grade teachers to the team for 2019-2020.
Student Note-Taking Strengthens Learning
Grade 5 students at Grace Thille are using three-column notes to support learning of math concepts. Grace Thille is in its second year of AVID implementation with all five grade 4 and 5 teachers trained at AVID Summer Institute. Students regularly use the note-taking process, both two- and three-column notes, in multiple content areas including math, social science, and ELA. SPHS AVID Students Visit CSUN
Santa Paula High School AVID students visited Cal State University Northridge on March 5. These students are in the grade 10 AVID elective class and have the opportunity to visit a college campus each year. Students toured the campus including the library, tri-level athletic facilities, and tutoring center. The picture was taken by none other than an SPHS graduate and current CSUN students found wearing his SPHS gear at college! Looks like these Cardinals had a great day!
Tutorials in Action at IMS
Isbell Middle School students in the AVID elective class participate in tutorials one to two days a week. During tutorials, students bring a "Point of Confusion" to their AVID class which is addressed by a peer group. College tutors work with groups of 5-9 students, not providing answers but rather guiding the group through inquiry and problem-solving strategies to find a solution to the "Point of Confusion." This year's AVID tutors are all SPHS graduates and current college students, and most are former AVID students themselves. These tutors support the learning process as well as promote the college-going culture.
