October Edition
Principal's Corner
Life is filled with highs and lows —happiness and struggles that will test your resilience and integrity, push you to overcome challenges and leave you with lessons that will make you even stronger on your way up.
It’s the way you feel and think about yourself, including your expectations and beliefs about what is possible to you, greatly determines everything that happens to you.
It all starts with your thoughts. When you change your thoughts, you transform the quality of your life.

Dallas County Health and Human Services Pop-Up Clinics
Dallas County Health and Human Services support our Public Health pathway students in various ways. For the last two years, they have been instrumental in students getting hands-on experiences to help them fully understand the work of public health. Dallas County has hosted a series of Pop-Up Clinics for community members to sign up for flu and COVID vaccines. Students who are bilingual were able to assist in translating and giving information to community members. On September 24th and October 22nd, the students were able to volunteer at Dallas ISD FAM JAM, which is community engagement in the four sectors of the city. It is a fun family activity with games, immunization, giveaways, academic activities, and over 30 resource booths. Dallas County Health and Human Services have a booth to help assist those who need immunizations, COVID tests, or just information. Our students always have a blast.

Principal for the Day
Principal For a Day is a project of the Dallas Independent School District, in partnership with the Dallas Regional Chamber and Capital One, that brings community leaders into schools across the district. The program is designed to:
- Increase awareness and understanding among individuals in the private sector of the strengths and challenges of schools in the Dallas ISD
- Demonstrate the private sector's commitment to ensuring a quality public education for all students, and
- Form ongoing partnerships between individuals/businesses and Dallas ISD
On October 18th, we were fortunate to host our industry partner representative from Baylor Scott & White, Mr. Kyle Armstrong, President of Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas and Baylor Scott & White Health – North Texas Central Region. It was a great opportunity for him to see the program in action. He was able to meet with our leadership team, our lead teacher and sit in some classrooms to see our teachers create magic. He has been instrumental in helping to brainstorm great ideas for our Public Health students.

Saran Ward-9th Grade Biology
Hello, my name is Saran Ward and I teach P-TECH Honors Biology to Freshmen (9th graders). I was a DREAMer originally from Thailand. My family and I immigrated to Texas in 2000. I graduated from Allen High School and then Austin community college, where I received my associate's in Biology. While getting my Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Neuroscience from the University of Texas at Dallas, I worked as a certified pharmacy technician. My interests include psychology, neuroscience, biology, philosophy, mixed martial arts, DC/Marvel comics, video games, and anime.
Ryan McKelvy-10th Grade World History Honors
I was raised in North Texas and lived for some time in Dallas before graduating from Rockwall High School in 2008. I then returned to my hometown of Wichita Falls to attend Midwestern State University (MSU). At MSU, I majored in History with a focus on Modern European History and minored in Political Science. I completed the last two classes of my undergrad studying abroad at Queen Mary University of London in the Summer of 2012. I graduated later that Fall and was able to teach American History for 2 years while working on my master's degree. In 2016, I graduated from Midwestern State University with a master's degree in History, focusing on American Western History.
After a few years in the public sector, I decided to pursue my original calling of being a teacher. I began my endeavor at Houston’s Westfield High School in 2019 where I taught everything from Government/Economics to World History to Dual Credit US History. In 2022, I made the decision to move to Dallas and was fortunate enough to join the Sunset P-TECH team where I currently teach World History Honors. I look forward to growing with the Sunset P-TECH Collegiate Academy and making sure my students are ready for Dual Credit US History next year.
Farewell for Now
Ms. Dallas, our MATH GURU, has left the Sunset P-TECH team to explore new opportunities. She still works with the district because of her endless commitment to Sunset P-TECH is agreed to finish out the semester as our Math 1314 professor. Ms. Dallas often tutored students after hours face to face and via Zoom. She utilized her extraordinary skills to prepare students for the Math TSI. Ms. Dallas was one of our original teachers that joined our team at the beginning of our journey. She was a HUGE asset and will be missed.
Internship Season
Greetings,
It is internship season. What does that mean? Well in P-TECH World it means that our students start preparing to apply for internships in the spring. Students should be updating their resumes with new personal information, adding certifications or volunteer hours. Students need to start researching opportunities online. They can start by registering with www.glassdoor.com. After they create an account they can select internships as part of their search and the site will send them regular emails with internship opportunities. So below I have given the top tips for resumes. Use it as a checklist of as you begin reviewing your resume. Juniors and seniors you should have already turned in a copy of your resume to Dr. Robison in the Workplace Learning Google Classroom for your grade level. Any questions please email her directly (trobison@dallasisd.org)

A Day at the Symphony
The Dual Credit Music Appreciation Students have been studying the evolution of music through the era's. We began studying the rise of Opera and its beginnings from the late Renaissance and Early Baroque, and will continue to follow the map of musical evolution through the music of today. This was just in time for the Dallas production of "Rigoletto", an opera by the famous Romantic composer, Verdi. On October 5, 2022, the students enjoyed a paid for trip to the Winspear Opera House located in downtown Dallas where they experienced [for most] their first ever live opera. The students are critiquing and analyzing their experience as of a live performance, part of the fulfillment of the syllabus via Mountain View College. They absolutely had a blast!
