A Message from the Principals

Congratulations on completing Quarter One of the 2020-2021 school year!

Although Comprehensive Distance Learning has presented some challenges and took time to get used to, we were able to finish the first quarter strong with improved habits and efforts in place!

As we wrap up the first week of Quarter Two, a few tips and reminders:

-We know this is a difficult time and we are here to help! If you are struggling to support your child or find ways to motivate them, please let us know so we can help find a solution. We are here to serve our students and families and want everyone to be successful!

-Be sure to complete work daily. Missing one day of work puts students behind in 3-6 subjects. Missing 3 days of work equates to more than 15 missing assignments and makes it very difficult to catch up.

-If your student is going to miss a day, send your teacher a message and let him/her know! Attendance will only count if you message them the day of the absence or the next morning before 8am.

-Missing work will only be accepted through Sunday. After Sunday missing work will be graded with a zero.

-Grades count toward grade level promotion during Distance Learning.

We will continue to do all we can to support educational success this year and are excited to see how wonderful RPA students perform in Quarter Two!

We hope to see you this Monday at Coffee with the Principals and Tuesday at our Native Language (Spanish) Community Circle!

Thank you for being a part of our RPA family!

Stay Safe and Healthy,

Mrs. Barnard and Mrs. McCollum

November Students of the Month!

Big picture

Time has gone by so quick, even virtually! We are about to begin December and our friends just came back from a well deserved Thanksgiving break. Kindergarten is ready to have their 4th test pretty soon in all three subjects! In reading, our friends are beginning to practice some harder sounds such as "th" and also are beginning to read small 2 or 3-sound words! In math they have already started counting past 30 and we even have a couple of students working on subtraction problems in rocket math! For language, we have introduced kindergarten to days of the week, new actions, object placements, and also opposites!! Around the middle of the month we also had our first virtual field trip to the OMSI. We got to see very cool pictures and demonstrations of our solar system, we even got some parents telling us their children were very excited to share all of the newly learned material at dinner! We are very excited to see our kiddos continue to grow even more as the year progresses!

First Grade

Happy December! We are so proud of all of the effort that first grade has put into the first quarter. As we begin the 2nd quarter of the year first graders are learning so much! In Math we are growing our skills with number families, as well as adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers. Please remember to continue practicing Rocket Math to strengthen quick math skills. We have had fun reading! In reading we are learning vowels and letter names. We have been so impressed with how dedicated our students are to morning meetings and small groups. Thank you for all of your hard work and positive attitudes. We look forward to a fantastic December.

Keep up the great work 1st grade!

Ms.Cortez and Ms.Ochoa

Second Grade

Second grade had a magical first quarter! We were blown away with how quickly the students figured out how school on-line would work. Second grade is definitely starting to get tricky, so please make sure your student always has a pencil and paper ready during the videos to take notes! In math we're continuing to practice multiplication, start and end problems, and geometry. We're starting comparing number families in the next week. In spelling, we've been practicing adding suffixes, learning opposites, finding consonant-vowel-consonant endings, spelling 4 letter words, and of course always practicing our handwriting! In reading we continue practicing our skills to read tricky words out loud like words with the silent e at the end and breaking words into syllables to read them quickly. In language we've been working hard on directions, ordering words alphabetically, and using coordinates to move around a map. Thank you for helping your kiddos succeed in quarter 1 and we can't wait to get quarter 2 underway! Reminder- we will have our first virtual field trip on December 10th.

Ms. Tate and Ms. Bond

Third Grade

Quarter 1 was an amazing start to the year, this group is power house of students thirsty for knowledge! For math we are beginning to understand fractions and continually practicing story problems to fine tune our decoding skills. In reading we are learning about what it takes to be an inventor. And with writing we are learning about sentence types and structure and are becoming quite the professionals! We are eager to see all the great things our third grade students do in Quarter Two! Keep up the great work!

-Mr. D and Ms. Pescitelli

Fourth Grade

Greetings from 4th grade! We are excited for the fresh start that comes with a new quarter, and we are looking forward to using our new chromebooks! In Reading Mastery, we’re enjoying a realistic fictional text about a young girl and her thoroughbred horse. Next, we’ll read about the domestication of animals. In math, we are working hard to differentiate between start and end word problems and comparison word problems. As math concepts become more complicated, knowing math facts with automaticity is crucial. Students are encouraged to complete multiplication in Rocket Math over winter break, and be ready to start division in January. In writing, we’re composing an informational essay on a native Oregon animal. Looking ahead, we can’t wait for our OMSI virtual field trip in January!

Lots of great things to come!

Mrs. Brown & Mr. Morgan

Fifth Grade

5th graders had an amazing first quarter, and we are excited to see where the second quarter takes them! Be sure to check Class dojo and the home class feed for updates and announcements! We have already hit the ground running with the second quarter as we continue our work with fractions and ratio problems in math, and we have just started reading about Sara Crewe! We have also made great progress in our informational writing unit where the students are working on a research project! We will be continuing with our small groups, and live morning meetings! Mr. Walker and I love seeing everyone's smiling faces in our morning meeting! Please remind students to turn their cameras on, as it can be boring talking to a bunch of letters, and it is a challenge to monitor students when we can't see them!

As always feel free to email or dojo us with any questions!

Ms. Lybarger and Mr. Walker

A Message From our English Language Teacher - Mrs. Peoples

ELD, Remember me?

English Language Development is functioning very differently this year. Not a surprise. I have been in regular communication with Principals and Classroom Teachers as how to best serve our clever multi- language students. We have a schedule, posted on Dojo. I have a Classroom, Mrs. Peoples Parlor.

When your student is scheduled, go to my Classroom, click on Meet Link, have notebook and pencil handy and be ready to participate in English Language Fun!

For those not on the ELL list, I will be observing morning meetings and live instruction. I will see all of our ELL learners!
