Diwali Celebrations

Diwali - is a Hindu festival of lights, joy, prosperity and happiness celebrated annually. It started this year on Monday, October 24 and it typically runs up to five days.

I am sure our whole Avoca community wishes our Hindu community members much happiness this Diwail. You can learn more about Diwali by clicking here.

Civically Engaged

In current era of divisiveness in our politics and our political rhetoric, it can be easy for people to disengage. Yet doing so is a detriment to our democracy. Instead, we must work toward civic engagement that is sustainable.

Our community engagement process and strategic planning committee brought this to the fore through a thorough process, culminating in recognizing that it would be important for our graduates to be civically engaged in the future.

Specifically, for Avoca and Marie Murphy, that means developing students who are "Inviting constructive and respectful civic participation, while contributing to their community and the world."

We must be able to create spaces where our students can identify public problems, propose public solutions, discuss those possible solutions, then make a plan for improvement in their community and beyond. Doing so will make our schools, communities, and world better for us and for them.

Town Hall Meeting on District Finances

A lot has changed (but some has not) since our 2021 Town Hall on District Finances.

The economy is changing, state revenue has changed for the better but no one knows how long, the District's operational finances have improved, and our capital improvement ability has deteriorated.

Nonetheless, there is a lot more to the picture. It is important that as a community you are informed about our financial status and future.

Please come to Marie Murphy on Thursday, November 10th at 7 p.m. Bring a friend.

I will make a 20 minute presentation, then ask you to take a brief survey and participate in focus groups so I and our Board and our Facilities & Finance Committee can understand your perspective and your questions.
