February 2018 Dairy Budget
The February 2018 Iowa-Nebraska dairy budget turned very negative for February. I was unable to complete a January budget. The 20,000 pound freestall budget shows a loss of $1.91 per cwt economic return while the 24,000 pound budget was negative by $0.22 per cwt. Continue...

Veterinarian Update: Using Pain Control & Anesthetics in Food Animals
Common Uses
Common procedures such as castration and dehorning have long been considered potentially painful for animals, but only relatively recently have there been products available for veterinary use to reduce pain associated with these surgeries. Streeter explained that there are some benefits to the presence of pain: it’s the physiologic response that makes the animal protect an injured part of the body, for example. When pain becomes chronic, however, many adverse effects on the animal have been documented, including impaired immune, cardiovascular, digestive, and neurologic functions. Furthermore, for some animals, the physical and psychological stimulation present during some painful conditions can wind itself up to the point where severe stress sets in. Continue...
