Week of 9/4/17 - 9/8/17
Letter from Principal Nelson
Cougars-
We wish you and yours a happy and safe Labor Day weekend and look forward to seeing all back on campus on September 5th. We’ll gladly welcome your student in the a.m. for a day of engagement and rigor, and then we’ll open our doors to y’all in the evening, as it is Back to School Night here in Smallville. For your convenience, we will have a shuttle bus running from Austin Oaks Church to Small Middle School starting at 5:15.
We will begin the evening with a short PTA meeting in the gym (5:40) followed by a General Assembly (6:00). Then, at 6:15 we’ll send you off to follow your student’s schedule. You will have an opportunity to attend all 9 of your student’s classes and get to meet each teacher while you go over a brief outline and synopsis. Please ask your student for a copy of their schedule. They should have one they wrote out for you in their backpack. Each class is only 7 minutes, so make sure you take copious amounts of notes to reflect back on. We love this event as it finally allows you to put a face with the name you’ve been emailing or seen in the gradebook these last few weeks. As per usual, please limit your questions to ones that pertain to the whole group; specific questions about your student should be handled in an email or phone call. Reason being is that we want to give your question the respect it deserves and would hate to forget about it due to the fast-pace of Tuesday. Also, make sure to grab a star off of your teacher’s door so you can help purchase much needed items for the classroom.
Junior Teen Leadership’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts:
I know I speak for the entire office staff and myself when I say this: we are amazed by you. Utterly amazed. We can’t believe the amount of donations that have been brought here and are eternally grateful. Our students banded together to streamline what is needed and necessary, and after the call to action went out, the Small community responded in kind; with compassion and purpose. Helping those in need is a trait we want to impress upon our students every opportunity we can, and the task is far easier when the same message is being relayed at home as well. Our community is a special one in that we come from all over the city, (different schools, different zip codes, etc..) but our mindset it all the same; do good things and take care of others.
Thank you for your help and thank you for raising socially conscious citizens.
We’re looking forward to Tuesday night. If you ever have any questions, comments, or even kudos, feel free to drop me a line or even swing by. If you want to see what it is your student is doing here in Smallville, then I invite you to follow me on Twitter as I’m always posting pics of amazing work going on in and around campus.

Late Bus
Many of you have asked about the Late Bus. Here is how it works and a list of the stops it makes...
Only eligible bus riders can get on the late bus, BUT, they have to know which of the stops below they stop at. The last bus will leave at 5:15 and only stop at the following stops...
Note: Students must have a reason for taking the late bus, tutoring, athletics, clubs or activities. They can not just hang around unsupervised on campus, then jump on the bus. New this year, A student must have a late bus wristband to enter the bus. Ms. Ana will be monitoring the wristbands. Wristbands will be given to students by the teacher that has the student after school.
