Mission Possible! - January 6, 2017
Thank you from your FMS EXPLO Team!
Mr. Chapman
From the Art Room
Happy New Year FMS Families!
Welcome new 6th Grade students!
Parents of the incoming sixth graders, I have talked to the students, and reminded them to bring a fine point sharpie marker and a ultra fine tip sharpie marker as well as a wooden pencil to class everyday. These items should have been on their materials list, as well as a set of watercolor paints, which we will use later.
Thank you, and if you have any problems locating or acquiring these items, please let me know.
7th grade are finishing up projects we had left from break and the couple of snow days. The next few days we will be busy getting photos, of their work, as well as projects from the last semester put into their electronic portfolio. We will begin a printmaking unit later this week, or starting next week.
8th grade, we started the New Year with positive expectations and a few expectation changes in the Art Room. From there, we got right in to our new project. Students were asked to pick a famous person, and create a likeness or interpretation of the person of their choosing. This can be a drawing, ,or an abstract interpretation, and they will share with the class a little bit about why they chose who they did, and a small background of their person.
As always, thank you for your support in the Arts, and if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. cchapman@fulton56.org

A new round of 6th grade started this past week as Tuesday was the beginning of the 3rd term. They will be in computer class for 9 weeks. They spend most of the week getting their computers setup for them, setting bookmarks, etc. They were absolutely amazing! It is going to be a great 3rd quarter with them in class :).
6th graders started their typing at 13 wpm with 90% accuracy. This will be their goal for next week too. While some students have already met grade level goals, all students should practice to improve their skills. Students were instructed if they did not meet their minimum goal that they should practice at home. They may practice anytime at typingtraining.com. Students can even use their Chromebooks to practice anywhere they have an Internet connection. They all have their login information. If you have any issues logging on at home, please email me. You can monitor your child's progress at home and school by going to the reports menu after they have logged into Typing Training. Many computer students email to ask login information or for me to assign specific assignments on typingtraining.com. I welcome these emails and respond as soon as possible.

RESCHEDULED BAND CONCERT
The rescheduled band concert is TONIGHT at 6:00 in the FMS gym. Students should be in their seats, ready to go by 5:45. Students should dress in their "Sunday best" and 8th graders should plan to wear their band polos, khaki pants, and black shoes. We hope to finish our portion of the concert by 6:45 (or sooner). As soon as the band portion of the concert is finished, we'll put chairs and stands away, set up for the choir concert, and students are free to leave. The choir concert starts at 7:00.
If students have their own stands and can use them, that would be very helpful! Please make sure students put their names on their stands, so they get them back after the concert.
Just a reminder about concert etiquette, please make sure all phones (and humans) are silent and still during the performances. Our kids worked REALLY hard and are very excited for this concert! We want to make sure they have a great experience, as do all the audience members. We do expect students to stay for the duration of the band concert (especially since it will be short!)
THE GUITAR KIDS WILL NOT PERFORM AT THE CONCERT TONIGHT! :-)
As always if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us via email at sblandford@fulton58.org or kneudecker@fulton58.org. You can also call the high school band office at 573-590-8135.

HORNET SINGERS:
Hornet Singers...though they be but few, they be mighty!
The students have finished the 2016 year strong and I'm excited for 2017 to be here.
Students will begin solo and small ensemble lessons as assigned and sent home through email THIS WEEK in preparation for Central Methodist University's Music Festival in March.
The choir handbook and schedule is online for your perusal anytime. (www.fulton58.org)
HARMONY HORNETS:
We are so proud of this group showcasing what they had been so diligently working on every Tuesday! Our amazing group is made up of a mixture of 6th-8th grade (7th/8th band or guitar members) and has great energy and interest in making great music. Rehearsals are every Tuesday from 3:20 - 4:15 in the FMS choir room (G07).
A new semester is here and therefore new students are accepted for Harmony Hornets at our first 2017 rehearsal on Tuesday, Jan. 10th. A form will need to be picked up from the choir room, completed, and brought with you. Hope to see you there!
If you ever have any questions, concerns, or comments, feel free to contact me at llehman@fulton58.org.
HORNET PRIDE:
Our first semester is already over, and I'm truly proud of the progress our group has made. Thank you, singers, for your hard work and dedication. I am looking forward to delving in and working on our music for the competition we will be attending at Central Methodist University in Fayette at the beginning of March. We have a lot to look forward to!
PLEASE REMEMBER that choir members MUST be in uniform at ALL of our performances this year. You may purchase the required polo shirt by bring $13 ($15 for XL) to Dr. Moebes. You will receive a receipt for your payment.
ARTS ALIVE:
3rd quarter classes are off to a great start! We have become acquainted, and started our first unit. We are kicking off the quarter by learning and practicing rhythm and beat. Singing is also one of our focuses. This week we will be "on our feet" doing some rhythm practice games, and learning the fundamentals of singing technique.
Please feel free to contact me at any time: bmoebes@fulton58.org. On Twitter: @MoebesMusic
Mr. Jackson
What a great time of year!!!! We have come away from Thanksgiving and the opportunity to reflect and give thanks for everything we have. We are quickly racing towards Christmas and the giving and receiving of gifts to loved ones. I found myself thinking of gifts that would be more than a month of enjoyment, or until the game was "beat". Enter the "cliche" library plug... books are possibly one of the perfect gifts. You can become anything, you can find any interest, you can master skills you wouldn't otherwise even have access to. Books remove limits, raise ability levels, and feed and energize our brains.
Check out this great link READING I found that works through some ways to encourage your students to read. Some fantastic recommendations with some very practical application. Enjoy the time, make memories, and grow together with your students.
Feel free to contact me at jjackson@fulton58.org with any questions or concerns.

FMS Guidance: Mrs. Garner & Mrs. Horstmeier
January is going to be a fun and busy month here at FMS!! We have many opportunities for Career Exploration coming up.
This week, 8th Graders will take a Career Interest Inventory through Missouri Connections. This inventory will take their responses concerning personal interests and skills to determine what career paths would be a good fit based on their responses. Students will then have the opportunity to research a variety of careers. Next, 8th Graders will take a Reality Check Inventory that allows them to determine how much money they think they will spend on bills, entertainment, clothes, etc. in the future. The Reality Check then gives students an annual income figure they would need to earn in order to support that lifestyle. Your student will have access to the results of these inventories through the Missouri Connections website.
On January 27th we will host our 2nd Annual "Stepping Up to Success" for the 8th graders. This program offers a line up of speakers from a variety of career fields as well as representatives from the High School to speak about clubs and sports. Our speakers this year come from careers in the areas of: education, coaching, cosmetology, social work, law enforcement, military, nuclear medicine, vocational careers, Dollar General, juvenile court, and professional singing. FMS appreciates these community members taking time out of their day to share their knowledge and experiences with our students. 8th Graders will be able to submit their top choices for speakers in the coming week.
6th and 7th graders will also have an opportunity to take a Career Interest Inventory in the coming weeks. We can't wait to see the results!
