Media and what it means to me! Also Media Literacy!
Media can be described in so many ways. To me, Media is everyone, including the papers, internet, the television and all sharing networks we have today. People can also be apart of the media, because it’s so easy to spread information or anything else by telling a friend! The media is what portrays our stars and the current events in the world. Media is also what seems to decide what is “beautiful” and what is “cool” or “trendy”. In many ways media can be used for good or bad, and it can often result in differences in opinion. The media, such as magazines or TV give people false images of beauty or what’s popular, often creating self-esteem issue with the youth or people in general. I think to be Media Literate is to be up to date with the media and being able to process the events. By up to date I mean like able to go up to someone and have a conversation about what is in the media today or recently. Also being able to process events or information and being able to have an opinion about it, it’s just like reading a book. It’s one thing to read and finish a book but it’s another thing to read and absorb and analyze the information you are reading. If you are literate in any sense I would believe that you can process and analyze the events or information that you have read or that you were given. I think many people are media literate without even thinking about it!

Jaguar 2014 Big Game Commercial
Jaguar, in the commercial “Jaguar 2014 Big Game commercial” (2014), draws parallels on how the Jaguar cars are powerful, trend-setting, and all together revamped for a new audience. Jaguar supports their parallels by demonstrating intense chases, with speed and agility, and showing off its modern, polished design though classic British villains. The author’s purpose is to enmesh the qualities of villains in movies, using many of our favorites known today so that we connect to the nefarious, but pleasurable traits that the villains and cars have in common. The tone of Jaguars commercial is controlled and invigorating to allure affluent, bold, and adventurous people into desiring the new Jaguar F- Type Coupe.

Students Protest against homework at local high school

WICHITA FALLS – Many teens stand outside Wichita Falls high school to protest and sign petitions for students with time consuming extra- curricular activities to have the same amount of homework in season as they do out of season.
March 22, 2014, Police and school administrators have been set out to secure the crowd and safety of the students. It started with the dedicated lacrosse player, Robert Peterson. His daily schedule was jam packed with school from 8:00am-4:00pm, lacrosse practice from 4:30pm-6:30pm every day, tutoring from 6:30-8:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and on the days when he didn’t have tutoring he had a lacrosse game. On Saturdays you can often find Robert working at Chick-Fil-A from opening until close to or to closing. Robert is also deeply rooted in his church, on Sunday he often helps the younger kids learn as well as being a leader in his youth group.
Peterson says he felt guilty. “I feel like the time I take trying to be a well-rounded student by extending myself to different activities that will make me a strive and become a better person could be better used from doing a bunch of school work” says Peterson, “I also understand that teachers see their class as the most important and that it makes sense to overwhelm a student with homework and tests all in the same day.” The students are asking that no matter if they are in season or if it’s their off season that the same amount of homework without any extensions granted. Robert made a petition and has created many social network pages to reach out to teens who feel the same way about school. So far it is a successful movement many teachers are on board with the request.
John Lennon " Imagine"
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
Media literacy Reflection
My view on media has definitely deepened, I now see and realized things that I was totally blind to at the beginning of this course. With this course we have seen all kinds of ways that media can be used for good and bad in society. I have also learned about how people use media and different tactics to portray what they want you to believe or see. Such as commercials and ads using youthful or “sexy” models to make you associate their product with this image. I definitely see this and often point it out now that I have learned about their trickery. The tactics of the media are definitely more obvious now than they ever were before, before I was blind to them and was just as brainwashed as everyone else in the world. This class is not by far like the average language arts class it’s very modernized and “hip” creating a better way for students to learn and engage in the classroom. Often seniors of kids of this level get bored with reviewing the same material every year. To be honest when I first stepped foot in the class I was already determined that it would be boring and mostly a repeat of things we have learned in the past. However as soon as we did our first assignment I knew this wasn’t any regular language arts class ,the criteria is more intriguing and I found it a lot easier to pay attention and grasp the material for this course. As far as the future goes I think each semester/year goes on they should update the things they discuss in the lesson so that it is current and more relatable for students. Also it would be nice to do some concept work sheets with more films and definitely more Socratic seminars! Over all this change was so successful to me and I am extremely glad it was made.
