Sartartia MS -- Exemplary Education Every Day -- 10.3.19
Jags are on the Move!
Dear Jag Families,
Happy October! This week we celebrated our custodial staff! Our amazing custodial team works tirelessly day in and day out. The efforts they put into keeping our campus beautiful, and our classrooms functioning as expected is unmatched. Please thank them and remind them of how much we appreciate ALL they do for us and our students.
Next week we will be celebrating Homecoming Week. We will have spirit days each day, a Pep Rally on Monday, and end the week on Thursday with our Fall Homecoming Dance. Tickets to the pep-rally will be sold tomorrow and Monday before school and during lunches for $3. Homecoming dance tickets will be available for purchase during lunches all week for $5. Bring additional money for food, snacks, and drinks to the homecoming dance.
I can't wait to see all the school spirit!
Fort Bend ISD will be closed to all students on Friday, October 11th (Teacher In-Service Day) and Monday, October 14th (Columbus Day).
Sincerely,
Cholly Oglesby
Principal

Student Spotlight
Jenny Kuang is simply a joy to be around. She is kind, hardworking, and exhibits many qualities of FBISD’s profile of a graduate.
When I asked her if she would invite a new 7th grader (new to SMS and new to the US!) to eat lunch with her group, she gladly did. I just think most middle schoolers would be hesitant/resistant to a teacher asking/forcing them to make a friend. Jenny also attends public speaking class, badminton lessons, and writing class on the weekend. Her favorite subject this year is Choir.
Staff Spotlight
Julie Amos is our Director of Bands at Sartartia Middle School. This is her 20th year teaching and her 8th year at SMS. Before coming to FBISD, she taught high school band for 12 years. Julie and her husband, Thomas, will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary this December. Her husband currently works at Kempner HS, his alma mater, as the CAC. They have two amazing sons, Tristan, who is a senior and has already been accepted to the College of Engineering to major in Cyber Security at UTSA, and Ian, who is a freshman honors student in high school. They also have an adorable boxer mix named Dakota.
Mrs. Amos grew up on a cotton farm, graduated third in her class, and is the first person in her family to graduate from college. She received a degree in Music Education from Texas Tech and her Masters in Wind Band Conducting from Sam Houston State. She often calls herself a “Red Bearkat”! Mrs. Amos believes education is the key to unlocking one’s future, and you can achieve anything you want to with hard work and perseverance! Never give up and never settle!
WE CAN ALL START BY SAYING HELLO!
Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) is a national, nonprofit organization based in Newtown, Connecticut. SHP is led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. SHP’s sole purpose is to educate and empower parents, schools and community organizations on how to prevent gun violence BEFORE it happens by providing mental health & wellness early-identification and intervention programs, gun safety storage practices and advocating for sensible state and federal violence prevention policy. For more information about Sandy Hook Promise and our other school and community-based prevention programs and training, please visit www.sandyhookpromise.org. Make the Promise and together we can protect children from preventable gun violence.
If you or your student would like to discuss ways to start and sustain the SAVE Promise Club at Sartartia, please let our associate principal know at sunday.johnson@fortbendisd.com.

Counselors' Corner
Hey Jag Parents!
We are so excited about the start of our 2019-2020 school year!! We have BIG plans for this year: exciting new programs and learning opportunities for you and your child to help you navigate through their middle school years. We hope to see you at parent nights and other learning opportunities that we are offering this year. Be on the lookout for dates/times in the parent newsletters and at Open House this week. Below we have included some of the things that are coming up so that you are aware:
No Place for Hate
Mrs. McCune is looking for students to serve on this years No Place for Hate committee. The committee will meet once a month to help plan 3 school wide activities to support acceptance by combating bias, bullying and hatred, and creating and maintaining a positive climate here at SMS. If your child is interested in being on the committee, please have them sign up in the student center or tell their grade level counselor at lunch
Level Changes
We will start to process level changes on Monday, September 9th. If your child would like to change their level from Pre-AP to Academic or vise versa, please send them to the students center to pick up a level change form. Please know that there are many steps to this form and the form will need to be completed before any level change is processed. A few things to note ** A conference between teacher/parent will need to happen before any level change is processed **Level changed will not be granted if a child has a 75 or above in the course, per district policy that is provided for you on the back of the form.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email your grade level counselor.
