In Class This Week!
Down on the Farm! Throughout the week, our class focused on our "My Little Farm" unit in Social Studies. The highlight for students was purchasing pigs and chickens to add to our farm plot grids. Students put their math skills to the test as they calculated the costs of purchasing multiple animals along with the essential items required for their care. In addition, this week we continued to practice writing different types of poems for each of our farm animals. On Tuesday, students used information from an article to write an informational poem about pigs and on Friday, we wrote a short poem about chickens with the use of similes! Our class was very creative with comparing chickens to other items. Next week, we'll be wrapping up our Farm unit with the purchase of horses and finishing up our last poems.

How Can You Help Your Child At Home?
I know many of you are interested in things you can be doing with your child at home outside of their homework. Here is a list of ideas!
- Math facts (addition). This is a big one. You can also practice with flash cards. Having a strong math fact base is imperative in 1st grade!
- iReady lessons, both Reading and Math.
- Reading to self and/ or out loud to a sibling or parent.
- Use the link below to have students listen to celebrities read their favorite stories! https://storylineonline.net/
- Writing a journal entry. Perhaps you went on vacation over the summer? Have them write about it!
- Cooking! Have your child follow the recipe.
- Chores around the house. This is great to help teach them responsibility! Here is a list of age-appropriate chores: https://www.scholastic.com/parents/family-life/social-emotional-learning/social-skills-for-kids/can-do-kids-chores.html
- PLAY OUTSIDE! Have them explore, get dirty, and get wet! This is where memories are made!
- Many stores in the area sell grade-level activity books. Or you can purchase one online, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Summer-Bridge-Activities
