Keeping you in-the-know at Mariner High School
February 2021
Principal's Message
Mariner Families and Community,
It’s been encouraging to see more and more students receive in-person services at Mariner. Over mid-winter break we had 35 seniors come to Mariner to complete work and earn credit for their 1st semester classes. These seniors worked diligently and many of them were able to complete credit to get back on track for graduation. We will continue to advocate for students and families for the option to return to the building for in-person instruction. Until then, please continue to support your students in the remote learning environment. Students need every credit to stay on track for graduation! Speaking of graduation, I’ve received a number of inquiries about the plans for the Class of 2021. We are currently planning graduation for Friday, June 11th. We are working closely with district administration to make every effort to celebrate our seniors with an in-person ceremony. It may look a bit different from normal years, but we understand the importance of graduation to seniors and families.
We had school picture day last month, and student ASB cards are here! Some students have already picked them up from school, and the rest of them will be sent home this week. To view and order pictures, go to lifenlight.gotphoto.com and enter the access code given to students on picture day (or scan the QR code given to students on picture day). If you do not have the code, you can call 425.737.3395 or email schools@lifenlight.com to get the access code you need. If your student did not make it to picture day, then we’d like them to attend picture re-takes on Wednesday, March 3rd. Re-takes are ONLY for students who missed the first day – not for students who do not like their pictures. All students will receive an ASB card and we need the photos for our yearbook! Students will enter the building from the bus loop doors and have photos taken in the concourse by the library. We would prefer that each grade level come at the times below, but if students cannot make it, they can come any time between 9am-1pm.
9th grade: 9:00-10:00am
10th grade: 10:00-11:00am
11th grade: 11:00-12:00pm
12th grade: 12:00-1:00pm
Please don’t hesitate to contact the school or a teacher directly if you have any needs or concerns. The building is open Monday-Friday from 7:30am-3:00pm, so feel free to stop by for any reason. We are here to support our students and families in any way.
Go Marauders!

Congratulations Khanh Doan
We are very pleased to announce that Mariner High School senior Khanh Doan has been selected as one of only two students to represent Washington as a delegate to the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) to be held online this year, March 14 – 17, 2021. Khanh will also receive a $10,000 college scholarship! The USSYP was founded in 1962 through Senate Resolution and each year two of the highest-achieving students from each state, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Education system overseas are selected through an extremely competitive merit-based selection process held at the state departments of education nationwide. Khan serves as the president of Mariner’s Junior State of America organization, the president of the National Honor Society, and was the ASB Treasurer her junior year. Originally born in Vietnam, she volunteers her time to teach Vietnamese to youth, in addition to working on political and advocacy campaigns. After graduating, Khanh will attend Columbia University in New York City as the first individual in her family to attend a four-year university, with plans to double major in political science and ethnicity and race studies, while furthering her interests in activism and political advocacy. Khanh is interested in attending law school to study civil rights or education law and intends to hold a political office in the future.
Congratulations to Khanh and to everyone at Mariner High School!

Japanese Classes Celebrate New Year's In Japan
Last month, we had a Japanese Class that had New Year’s Post Card Art Contest the first-semester Japanese classes
A little bit about お正月(Oshougatsu), New Year’s in Japan: New Year’s is celebrated the first week of January, and it is the biggest holiday in Japan. People usually prepare special food, throw big parties, go back to their hometowns to gather with family, do their first shrine and temple visits of the year, and do a big year-end cleaning of their homes. The art work students did are their own interpretations of Japanese New Year’s Cards, or 年賀状 (Nengajou) that people send out to their friends, families, and co-workers. Another fun fact: Unlike many other Asian countries, Japan stopped using Chinese Lunar calendar in 1873 during the Meiji Restoration, which is why we celebrate at a different time.

Stay Connected!
Information and news about Mariner High School are available in a variety of formats. This year, you will receive a phone message and email from the district if we close or delay school. This helps ensure we reach everyone, including those without an email address on file, before students stand outside at a bus stop, and before parents leave for work. If you added a text message number in the Blackboard portal https://mukilteoschooldistrict.bbcportal.com/ you would also receive a text message. As usual, school delays or closures will be posted on the district website and posted through FlashAlert, which also feeds into mainstream local news feeds.
