12th Grade Updates NOVEMBER
CHS Counseling Office
Construction and Skilled Trades Fair
On Tuesday, November 23, the School Counseling office is taking students to the 5th Annual Construction and Skilled Trades Day at the Lake County Fairgrounds. There are a limited number of spots available. If you are interested in attending-talk to your school counselor!
College Applications and Portals
Portals are the place where colleges keep applicant information and where you can update contact information, monitor application status, upload and track documents, and view the final admission decision. If you miss a request for more information or a document, it could jeopardize your admission chances, so make it a habit to check regularly.
Laborers Local 81 Lunch Visit
On November 18, Laborers Local 81 will be in the cafeteria to answer student questions. LIUNA Local 81 currently represents members who work in the construction industry in northern Indiana affiliated to LIUNA - the Laborers' International Union of North America
Scholarships
College-bound seniors! Don't forget to apply for scholarships! Bookmark our scholarship webpage and check back often!
- Make your application stand out! Type your information right onto the application. This makes it look more professional than a handwritten application.
- Pay close attention to due dates and where applications are to be turned in or postmarked.
- All scholarship applications that are due to the Counseling Office must be turned in by 3pm on its due date. No late applications will be accepted.
Anxiety
Anxiety is a normal reaction to stess, everyone feels anxious sometimes. A little bit of anxiety can actually be a good thing, it can help us focus and accomplish our goals. For example, if you feel a little anxious when studying for a test or getting ready for a performance, the adrenaline might help you focus and work harder and faster. However, sometimes anxiety becomes overwhelming.
So what can you do if you are feeling overwhelmed by anxiety? There are some things you can do on your own, and sometimes you need help from others.
- Practice relaxation-set aside time during the day where you are away from distractions. Intentionally focus on relaxing your body. You can start with your head and work your way down. Don't worry if you find your thoughts drifting, just bring them back to the present moment and continue on with your relaxation exercises.
- Unplug-Social media and our phones are a great way to connect with others, but we are also seeing an increase in students' anxiety when they are spending too much time on their phones. You can "unplug" in the following ways: Charge your phone away from your bedroom so you aren't tempted to check it into the night hours. Set aside time each day where you take a break from your phone. Turn it off, put it in airplane mode, or put it in another room in the house.
- Talk to an adult-You are not alone, even if your anxiety makes you feel that way. Talk to an adult that you trust about how you are feeling. Sometimes we need help from professionals, and the adults in your life can help you navigate those options.
