Bowie Baptist Association
Making Disciples (Part 4)
This post continues a series concerning essential components to fruitful discipleship. You can review the first three, intentionality, biblical focus, and relationship based in the February, March and April editions of the FOCUS, available online at www.bowiebaptist.org.
Experiential training is the fourth component to fruitful discipleship. This involves moving beyond the mere teaching of God’s word, which of course is essential, to demonstrating Biblical truth and providing opportunities for believers to practice themselves what they learn.
We see this in Jesus’ ministry with his disciples. The gospels give us an abundance of his teaching, the Sermon on the Mount for instance. And we know of several examples where Jesus modeled life and ministry for his disciples. See this in every gospel Bible story.
But Jesus went beyond teaching, and even modeling. Mark 6:7 tells how he sent them out to practice what they had learned, going two by two, later returning back to report how it went (Mark 6:30). I’ve always been taken by the idea that the feeding of the 5,000 occurred as Jesus was conducting his debriefing of the apostles’ first ministry experiences.
What happens far too often in our churches is that preachers and teachers present the Word with no follow up. We teach in the hope that God’s people will respond appropriately. Praise the Lord for those who do. But the greatest fruit is born when teachers take the next step and use experiential learning to help disciples connect the message of scripture with their own lives and ministry.
On a personal note,
Thank you for your prayers for me and my family during the recent illness and death of my father, James Moody. God revealed Himself in many ways through this season. Please continue praying as I work to close out his estate, modest as it is, and return to my ministry routine.
Blessings,
Bro. Jim

D-Life
Looking for a tool for effective disciple-making? How about church revitalization. Consider D-Life. D-Life is a relational disciple making approach where groups of 3 to 8 men or women commit together to do several things:
· Read a chapter of the Bible daily
· Meet for an hour once weekly for fellowship, accountability, prayer, and Bible study
· Complete a ministry project at least once every two months
· Multiply / form a new group at least once every year
Several BBA congregations are launching D-Life. If you would like to explore how D-Life can bless your church, or if you are interested in joining a D-Life group, contact Bro. Jim.
Bi-State School of Ministry
Registration is open for the Fall Semester of the Bi-State School of Ministry, offering college level training for ministry. Fall courses include:
Ministry Foundations, a study of the call to ministry and foundational abilities necessary for fruitful ministry, taught by Dr. Jim Turnbo. In Jim’s previous work as a missionary to Native Americans, a large part of his assignment was “raising leaders from the harvest.” Anyone exploring God’s call, either to vocational ministry or lay Christian service, would benefit from this class.
Introduction to the Old Testament, a survey course through the Old Testament scriptures taught by Dr. Bill Steeger. Dr. Steeger is an Old Testament specialist with a special gift for communicating the richness of Biblical narrative. Preachers, ministry leaders, and Bible study teachers would all benefit from this course.
If you are interested in either of these classes, contact the associational office. Classes begin August 21st & August 22nd.
