Hillcrest Elementary School

May 7, 2021

Dear HCE Families,

It was another great week of learning and fun at school. PSSA testing is over for 2021 and all students did a wonderful job of following directions and staying quiet in the halls for their classmates. It truly takes the cooperation of the entire building to successfully complete a large scale task like PSSA testing. The staff is very proud of all of the students for their efforts.

Next week begins Spirit Week. Each class will participate in multiple activities during the PE class with Mrs. Hart and Ms. Blum. Please be sure your child wears his/her Spirit Day t-shirt which has been provided by our PTO.

Lastly, I would like to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all of our moms. I am wishing you a fun and relaxing weekend as you hopefully get to spend some quality time with the important people in your life.

Stay well,

Thank you for making Teacher Appreciation Week so special! From the lawn sign to notes of appreciation, coffees, breakfast sandwiches, plants and just making us feel especially loved and appreciated this week....WE THANK YOU for EVERYTHING, but especially for sharing and entrusting us with your children each day. We are truly are the lucky ones!

Important Parking Lot Safety Reminders...

We have seen a major increase in car riders this year, especially this month. We expect that number to grow once the fourth marking period begins on April 6th. We would like you to drop off and pick up the children “roller coaster style”. One entire row of vehicles should load and unload children at the same time. Please do not go around other vehicles unless directed to do so by a staff member as that may put another person in a dangerous position.. Thank you for your cooperation.

Bus Safety Reminders....

The children who ride the bus have been doing well all year with their efforts to keep themselves and others safe on the way to and from school. However, I'm passing along reminders to parents to reinforce with their children regarding two areas that could use improvement to help maintain each child's safety.

First, masks must be worn at all times. This is outlined in the district's Health and Safety Plan, and it is a requirement if a child would like to ride the bus. Second, children should refrain from eating any food on the bus. Sometimes, students may be running late and want to eat breakfast on the bus. However, this creates such a hazardous situation in case there was ever an issue with a child choking. In addition, eating would require a mask to be removed and students are not always six feet apart while riding the bus.

Kindly take a moment to review these safety expectations with your child. At school, we remind students that they are responsible for themselves, but they need to take care of others. Thank you.

Please be advised that based on the revised PA Department of Health's face-covering order put into effect on November 18, 2020, all staff and students must wear face coverings while on school district property or riding school buses. A plastic face shield may NOT be worn in place of a face-covering unless wearing a face covering is not possible. Families should contact their building principal if their child must wear a plastic face shield due to an inability to wear a face covering. Staff should contact their supervisor for the same circumstance.

From the Governor’s November 17, 2020, Face Covering Order

“Face covering” means covering of the nose and mouth with material that is secured to the head with ties, straps, or loops over the ears or is wrapped around the lower face. A “face covering” can be made of a variety of synthetic or natural fabrics, including cotton, silk, or linen. A “face covering” may be factory-made, sewn by hand, or be improvised from household items, including, but not limited to, scarfs, bandanas, t-shirts, sweatshirts, or towels. While procedural and surgical masks intended for health care providers and first responders, such as N95 respirators, meet those requirements, these specialized masks should be reserved for appropriate occupational and health care personnel.

“Alternative to a face covering” may include a plastic face shield that covers the nose and mouth, extends below the chin and to the ears and leaves no exposed gap between the forehead and the shield’s headpiece. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised there is currently not enough evidence to determine how much protection a face shield provides to individuals around the person wearing the face shield, because of gaps where respiratory droplets may escape. The CDC does state, however, that face shields may still be an option in situations where wearing a cloth face covering is not otherwise feasible.

👟iRun4Life Fitness App

iRun4Life is launching a new, fun, free iRun4Life Fitness App specifically designed for elementary school children. The iRun4Life Fitness App is free and can be downloaded on all Apple and Android devices- simply search in the app store for “iRun4Life.”

Key Features of the iRun4Life Fitness App for kids include:

3. Yoga & Dance – Fun kid friendly yoga and dance videos that can be done at home with your friends and family. Videos will be updated monthly.

💻Digital Citizenship

At the following LINK, you can find an excellent short video regarding digital citizenship. This term refers to the responsible use of technology by anyone who uses computers, the Internet, and digital devices to engage with society on any level. Thus, this is such an important topic for our students. Take a moment to view it with your children.

💻 Chromebook Issues???

Effective Monday , October 26th, we would like parents/students to start using our help desk system. The link is this one: https://crsdstudent.sherpadesk.com

The system will allow students/parents (student ID is required to submit a ticket) to submit a ticket for help. It will also allow them to see the status of existing tickets.

The first time you use the system, you will need to setup an account. This will require a unique email address, the location where the student attends school (this is a required field), your first and last name, a phone number where you can be reached (if additional/different contact information/preferences are desired, that can be included in the body of the request), the type of issue (called class on the form - this is also required), the student ID (this is required), a subject or brief description of the issue, and then the details about the issue.

To see the status of a ticket that was submitted, you can click on that option, login with your email address and password (set during account creation).

IT will continue to monitor the chromesupport email address but will refer parents/students to the ticketing system if you have an issue or problem that needs to be resolved.

The two biggest advantages to this system are that the ticket will go directly to a technician, and the parent/student will be able to see the status of the tickets they have entered.

Forgotten Items???

All forgotten items should be dropped off in the Main Lobby. Once you enter the building look for the metal cart (see below) by the Main Office doors. Write your child's name and the Homeroom Teacher's name on the item. Our Office Staff checks the cart often and delivers all items to the classroom in a timely manner.

As a reminder: You must wear a MASK when you enter the building.

🌟Important Reminders🌟

🌟Children arriving to HCE after 9:10 a.m. must be accompanied by a parent and escorted to the office to sign in before entering their classroom.

🌟Please charge your Chromebook or device each night so it is ready to go for the next school day.

We are asking that parents place your yellow placards in your passenger side window during car rider pick-up. This will allow staff to see your names easier. See example..

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a disease capable of rapidly spreading to other persons with whom you come in contact. If you have been infected, you are capable of exposing other people to COVID-19, even if your symptoms are mild, such as a cough. Symptoms of COVID-19 may include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Early symptoms may also include chills, body aches, sore throat, headache, diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, and runny nose. Given that COVID-19 is a threat to the public’s health, staff members are asked to perform the following self-symptom assessment prior to entering school. Similarly, guardians are asked to conduct symptom assessment of children each morning prior to the students entering school.

Symptom assessment: Does your child have any of the following?

Fever (body temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or 38.0 degrees Celsius)?

Cough? Shortness of breath? New loss of/altered taste or smell? Fatigue? Chills? Body aches? Sore throat? Headache? Diarrhea? Nausea/vomiting? Runny nose?

If you answered yes and do not have another explanation for that symptom (e.g., allergies), please remain home until symptoms improve or medical documentation for alternative diagnosis is provided and notify the school nurse of the reason for remaining at home. If you have any questions or concerns, contact your primary care physician and/or school nurse.

Thank you for helping to keep our entire Council Rock community healthy and safe!
