Elk Powerlifting
Ethan Haynes closed out his powerlifting career with the best performance of his career and did it on state’s top stage.
Haynes turned in career-best lifted in all three categories at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association Division 1 state championships Saturday at Abilene’s Taylor County Expo Center.
“Ethan Haynes did set all personal bests,” Burleson coach Scotty Williams said. “He had a 600-pound lift in him on the squat, but hindsight is always 20/20.”
Haynes finished in the 148-pound weight class with a career-high combined weight total of 1,465 pounds. Haynes weight totals were squat (580 pounds), bench (335) and deadlift (550).
Haynes effort helped the Elks finish in a tie for ninth place with six points, but after weight coefficient was factored in Burleson placed 13th overall.
“All our lifters moved up in the rankings, except one,” Williams said. “We had an outside shot at fourth or fifth place, but that is why we have the meet.”
The Elks had four other lifters compete at state.
“We are extremely proud of the lifters, all of our lifters,” Williams said. “It is always nice for coaches to come up and ask about your kids by name because they track their progress all year.
Burleson powerlifting is not under the radar anymore. Teams know we can pull to win in any weight class. I do want to thank coach Vogel for his great work. He is a bench press guru and it showed this year, also want to thank coach McElroy and the coaches for working and the support this year.”
At 114 pounds, Cesar Ledesma scored the Elks other points with a fifth-place finish. Ledesma lifted a combined weight total of 1,025 pounds. In the same class, Erick Samayoa finished 10th with a combined weight total of 930 pounds.
Jacob Moss, lifting at 132 pounds, placed eighth with a combined weight total of 1,100 pounds at 198 pounds, Hunter Cunningham finished 20th with a combined weight total of 1,400 pounds.
Elk Baseball
A 12-hit attack and solid pitching helped Burleson to an 11-1 District 5-5A road win at Arlington Seguin Tuesday night.
The Elks got three RBI from Carson Hallack and a pair of RBI each from T.J. Pound and Isaiah Smith. Smith also delivered a double in the victory. Blake Myers hit a triple and Evan Jameson added a double.
“I was proud of our offense,” Burleson coach Daniel Bruce said. “They found ways to get on base in negative counts. I love the way we are competing and doing unselfish things. We still have things to work on but our kids approach things the way you are supposed to.”
With the win Burleson (15-3-1, 4-1) stayed in a tie for first place. The Elks will try for the series sweep when they host Seguin Friday night. Burleson hosts Centennial Tuesday night and plays at Centennial April 5.
Lady Elk Softball
Strange things happened in the late innings Tuesday night in Burleson’s 6-5 District 5-5A loss at Mansfield Legacy.
The Lady Elks, who had played solid defense in the first three innings, let things get away from them in the fourth inning.
“Untimely things happened with two out and that was kind of unfortunate,” Burleson coach Summer Owen said. “We had a couple of big strikeouts when we had runners in scoring position. We can only control what we can control. One call doesn’t lose a ballgame.”
The loss dropped the Lady Elks (13-7, 5-3) into fourth place in district play. Burleson hosts Mansfield Timberview Friday and hosts Arlington Seguin Tuesday.
Lady Elk Soccer
It had been a while, 2457 days to be exact, since Burleson’s girls' soccer program won a playoff game.
The Lady Elks ended their playoff victory drought Thursday night with 3-2 Class 5A Region I bi-district playoff win over Fort Worth South Hills at Scarbrough-Handley Field.
Burleson’s last playoff victory came over Granbury, 1-0, on April 6, 2012.
The Lady Elks (15-7-3) will face Colleyville Heritage in an area-round playoff game on Monday or Tuesday.
Sophomore midfielder Jordan Walker scored the go-ahead goal in the 67th minute when the Lady Scorpions keeper couldn’t contain a corner kick by sophomore defender Shea Moore. The ball landed at Walker’s feet and she knocked it into the net.
Freshman keeper Faith Gilstrap, who was solid all night, made two nice saves in the final minute. South Hills had a chance to score in the final seconds but could get the shot off before time expired.
The Lady Elks took a 1-0 in the 16th minute when freshman Kylie Jo Harris scored. South Hills answered in the 35th minute with a breakaway goal by sophomore forward Cristal Saldivar.
Just when it seemed the team would go into halftime tied, sophomore forward Maycie Massingill registered a goal with one minute to play.
The Lady Scorpions tied the game in the 44th minute when junior midfielder Johana Rodriguez scored off a point-blank shot.
