The Right Rituals

Plattsburg Illustrated

By: Andrew Wilson

Pre-game rituals are a huge thing for athletes at every level. The pros have them, and even middle and high schoolers have rituals before each game. Rituals can be a motivating mindset for an athlete before each game and that mindset can affect how a player plays.

Lebron James, the small forward for the Cleveland Cavaliers, stands in front of the crowd at home games, gets a hand full of chalk, and throws it in the air. Hall of Fame third baseman, Wade Boggs, ate chicken before each and every game in his career. Les Miles, the head coach for LSU, ate grass before each game! Blake Griffin, a basketball power forward for the Los Angeles Clippers grabs ahold of the rim and does a pull up. Stephen Curry, the point guard for the Golden State Warriors, does a dribbling routine before each game.

There are many different pre-game rituals from athletes around Plattsburg High School.

Junior, Hailey Kerby, said, ¨Before each basketball game, I would stuff my face full of food.¨

Junior, Corey Close, said, ¨Before each basketball game I would keep adjusting my jersey to fit just right." It was a habit, but one that worked!

Junior, Andrew Querrey, said that before each golf match the team sits in a circle, holds hands, and sings Kumbaya! Dakota Rau told me that every game the softball team would listen to Kelsie Lewis give everyone a motivational speech. Jackson McQuerrey eats a bunch of hot wings before each baseball game. Before each football game, Matthew and Isaiah Graham would get down on one knee and pray. As a team, they would listen to Coach Musser give speeches to get all the players pumped up for the game.

All athletes and teams do a different thing before each game to get pumped up and ready to play. Here at PHS, the rituals seem to be working!

We would love to get as much film as we can from you!

Thank you so much!
